Story
There are those in the great expanse of the galaxy that seek profit wherever it is to be found: the deal makers, the opportunists and explorers – the Rogue Traders. Granted power by an ancient charter, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself, these scoundrels, entrepreneurs and adventurers roam the galaxy in search of fortune and glory. None perhaps are as hungry for these twin vices as Janus Draik.

Summary
Book 2 in the Watchers of the Throne series
A new day has dawned for the Imperium, but not everyone sees the light. The Custodian Guard and Sisters of Silence must battle not just Chaos, but those who do not share Regent Guilliman's vision....
Listen to it because:
See how enemies lurk everywhere in the Imperium - even on Terra itself - and discover how the Adeptus Custodes excel at rooting out the darkness that lurks on the Throneworld and bringing it to light.
The story:
As Guilliman, Regent of Terra, heads off to lead the Indomitus Crusade, he leaves behind a world still in turmoil, beset by cult activity. Stripped of its huge armies for the galactic offensive, recovery is precarious. The Custodians do what they can while keeping the Palace secure, and the Sisters of Silence rebuild their citadel on Luna. When the warship Phalanx returns, it seems that stability will at last be assured. However, as reconquest forces push out further into the slums, they come across signs that another mysterious foe is active. The truth dawns - not every enemy is corrupted by Chaos, for there are many on Terra who do not share Guilliman’s vision of a new order, and the prospect of a Terran civil war looms...

This book is a superb second outing for the new power couple in the Warhammer universe, I’m not ignoring the chancellerus at all but the characters I want more of are our favourite custodian and silent sister, the narration is outstanding and completely engrossed me in the tale, I looke forward avidly to the next story in this series

A fantastic sequel
Another great contribution to the lore of the Dark Imperium. John Banks' masterful narration is complemented superbly by Emma Gregory and Penelope Rawlings.
The plot has twists and turns that are carefully considered and fit into the narrative with an expert's touch. Chris Wraight shows a deep understanding of the monolithic Imperium that has existed in WH40K now for decades and is as nebulous as it is a fascinating glimpse at a mirror of humanity.
Valerian and Aleya make for excellent contrasts in character, with motivations and personalities that stem from far different perspectives but ultimately serve the same purpose.
I'd eagerly await to see a third entry in this series as it strikes a perfectly balance between overall 40K universe development and a compelling study in the characters that occupy it.

Enjoyed the political aspects
This was a particularly satisfying listen, just like its predecessor, for the insight into political aspects that were a little more nuanced than most. The three character rotation throughout the series has been enjoyable because all of the characters are believable within their capacities to act (or not). This book particularly had a satisfying denouement and the final sentence was wonderful.

Excellent. Slightly choppy narrative ark.
I really enjoyed it. My only gripe is that there are a few narrative lines that don’t really get explained or where they do, it’s with a couple of lines saying ‘so we never really found out why...’. This may be cause the author wants to bring them back in again for the next in the series of course. However I nonetheless enjoyed the book.
