Summary
A Warhammer 40,000 novel
When he discovers a prize that could change the face of the galaxy, disgraced Rogue Trader Janus Draik recruits a team to treasure-seeking misfits to claim it. But danger lurks in the darkness…
Listen to it because: The full story behind the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress game is revealed! Join Janus Draik and his crew as they venture into the depths of the fortress and encounter all manner of deadly foes.
The story: There are those in the great expanse of the galaxy that seek profit wherever it is to be found: the deal makers, the opportunists and explorers – the Rogue Traders. Granted power by an ancient charter, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself, these scoundrels, entrepreneurs and adventurers roam the galaxy in search of fortune and glory.
None perhaps are as hungry for these twin vices as Janus Draik. All but disowned by his wealthy family, regarded as a wayward son of ill repute and little potential, Draik knows he must restore his fortunes soon or his misadventures will see him destitute and discarded.
So it is then that when he finds a truly exceptional prize, one that will return him to his deserved station, Draik recruits a crew of fellow treasure seekers and sets them to the task. Draik's obsession is all-consuming, and he will risk everything to obtain his prize and its many secrets, including his life or even that of his crew.

Awful narration
I tried and tried again to listen to this book but the narration was just not for me, I found it grating and insulting to be honest, I have also purchased the book on kindle so will read it instead of listening

Dont listen to the other reviews
Guys
I'm not sure why this was getting a bad write up for acting and so on the chap doing it Sean Connolly did amazing!
The story was great- many twists, and the nobility characters were funny- ancient English knights
So you know what I like- Eisenhorn, Ravenor, The Start of the Heresy, (rest is tosh) Manflayer, Night lords, Black legion

Action Adventure in the Dark Millennium
It’s refreshing to listen to a Warhammer 40k novel and it not being another war story or how the space marines are the best thing since sliced bread.
It’s odd to think that these sort of stories are rare for the 41st millennium.

The narrator is not bad
I really enjoyed this audiobook. It was a refreshing change from story after story featuring space marines.
The narrator is different to the 5+ 40K audiobooks I've listened to, however, you do get used to him and you learn why he was picked. His ability to voice multiple characters with wildly different voices is fantastic.
The opening chapter, prologue, I think it's called is awful. Just get through it. Once you do you'll enjoy the rest.

Enjoyed this one
Ive long found the idea of Blackstone Fortresses fascinating and this was very interesting for that reason. There was one part early on which I found a bit jarring where a character arrives somewhere without a lot of explanation (trying for no spoilers) but it makes sense later. All in all good though, would recommend and hope there's sequals a plenty, its a great environment and I liked the characters.

meh
bland adventure story with a large cast of underdeveloped and 1 dimensional characters. the main character, drake, is one of the worst characters despite receiving the most attention. not bad, but definitely not good.

I was bamboozled...
So I started this mainly because I heard that UR-025 and Amallyn Shadowguide were gonna be in this story. UR 025 is the only link that can shed some light on how humanity was like in The Dark Age of Technology and I was curios about its interaction with the eldar ranger. Since eldar live longer most still remember the Men of Iron and what Humanity was like before the Imperium. Aaaaand I got none of that. I was expecting something like Vermintide. You know, a band of misfits trying to uncover the secrets of The Black Fortress. Don't get me wrong that did somewhat happen but not how I was expecting. Also the 2 characters that made me want to listen to this book only showed up for like 5 seconds as a past mention. Like "I was walking down the street when I was an eldar and admech robot with a weird design". THAT'S IT! I kept going hoping they might show up later in the book but nope. Honestly the only good characters are the Kroot and Draik. The rest are just generic as hell. I swear half the book is just "THE EMPEROR HAS SHOWN ME A VISION THAT TELLS ME HOW TO BEAT THE UNFAITHFULL! GO THAT WAY!".
Overall, it's an ok book I guess. Nothing to special. It doesn't change the lore in any meaningfull way or anything. 5/10

Not bad, but forgettable
This feels like a tie in to the boardgame more than a book inspired by it. The consequences of actions never feel high. It wasnt the worst BL audio I've listen too, but certainly not the best. Ultimately a footnote in the lore of 40k

Interesting story twists, but
Too many 40K books fall into the trap of “if I just put in a bunch of weird shit it will be okay”. Yeah, no. And I know that “realism” isn’t exactly the standard here, but even within the context of 40k this doesn’t make sense. This is a shame, I had high hopes.

Loosely based on the game
This is a spinoff of the actual game. Not all characters are included in some way and some of the ones that are do not get accurate descriptions. It's 'Ascension' followup story hopefully would include them. The story is entertaining though not a blockbuster. Again, themes from the game and its expansions are woven in but not how the game plays. I would not recommend buying this at full price.

great fun adventure book in 40k
Great great book if you are tired of the war books like the space marine conquest and gaurd books, way more of an eisenhorn esque adventure though a bit more light hearted.
