Summary

A Space Wolves Novel

Sent to defend an important shrine world against the plague-ridden Death Guard, the Space Wolves clash with pious allies who see them as little better than the enemy they fight.

Liston to it because....

It's a fresh look at the Space Wolves, focusing on pack dynamics and their relationship with the wider Imperium—plus, of course, plenty of savage action!

The story:

The feral warrior-kings of Fenris, the Space Wolves are the sons of Leman Russ. Savage heroes, few can match their ferocity in battle.

After half a century apart, Space Wolves Ingvar and Gunnlaugr are reunited. Sent to defend an important shrine world from the plague-ridden Death Guard, the Grey Hunters clash with the pious Sisters of Battle—who see the Space Wolves as little better than the enemy they fight. As enemies close in around them and treachery is revealed, Gunnlaugr and his warriors must hold the defenders together—even as hidden tensions threaten to tear their pack apart.

Written by Chris Wraight. Narrated by Andrew James Spooner. Run time approx. 13 hours 39 mins.

Bloody great stuff; one of my faves (and I’ve read a lot of Warhammer)

Some Warhammer titles can be a bit airy fairy and just talking talking talking as I’ve discovered (ie. with ones that concern ‘the Phoenix’). However, with the space wolves you know that you’re just gonna get bonkers, giant macho Viking Wolf men wanting to cut the heads off things all the time. The plague enemy are as repellent as ever, and there’s lots of pus and slime and gore from them. Oh yeah, and some lady soldiers looking after a church.

brilliant

I loved this. the sheer level of gore and the detail to the grotesqueness of the death guard was exquisite. this was the perfect rendition of Nurgles forces and the passion of the space wolves was on a different level. the writer has done an amazing job and the narrator needs the highest of praises.

On a level with ADB

Nice to see (hear) a Black Library author stepping up to Arron Demski-Bowden’s level of character development and story telling through dialogue.

Fantastic book

This is a fantastic book but don’t bother getting it as books 1 and 3 are available in the series but not book 2

On the story itself I really enjoyed it, I personally love anything written about the Space Wolves. I thought the author has started a great story

Just a shame I can’t get book 2 here in the UK but it available in other languages. I don’t understand how books 1 & 3 are here but not book 2

it's not bad

honestly not that memorable or engaging, I found myself drifting several times during the first half of the book, funny part is that's where the characters are introduced which is normally my favourite part of a book...
second half had me far more engaged and did the characters much better

Let's hope the sequel sorts this

This shouldn't have been a standalone story,
considering, the wolves bicker and seem to suffer an identity crisis at the best of times, it is quite a slow social grind for what is at least the first dozen chapters. However, don't let that put you off, I couldn't turn it off once the action started, I know that Stormcaller is the sequel, and I eagerly await the audiobook for that. the characters could use a bit of rounding, but are redeemed by Hafloy and Girondor, and their grim comical pack anima(sequel) behaviour. A great way to spend almost 13hrs driving and painting for sure. Needs more action!
