About this listen

Book one in the Forges of Mars series.

An Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleet ventures beyond the borders of the Imperium in pursuit of arcane technology. Who knows what perils may lie outside the dominion of mankind?

Listen to it because: it's a novel like nothing else from Black Library. Graham McNeill crafts a tale that only he could tell, beginning a mind-bending saga of the Adeptus Mechanicus, Chaos and more besides.

The story: legend tells of a foolhardy expedition, led by the radical Magos Telok, that ventured out into the unknown space beyond the Halo Worlds in search of the 'Breath of the Gods' - an arcane device with the power to unmake and reshape the very stars themselves. Thousands of years later, the ambitious Lexell Kotov musters his Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleet and sets out to follow in mad old Telok's footsteps. With the might of the Imperial Guard and the Space Marines to augment his own forces, he searches for the hidden clues that will lead him to greatest power that the galaxy has ever known. But who knows what ancient perils may yet lie outside the Imperium and the dominion of mankind?

Written by Graham McNeill. Narrated by Joe Jameson.

Cockney Space Marines! (but give it a go)

I was a bit reluctant to go for this book, based on some of the negative reviews. However, I was pleasantly surprised... The narrator's voice doesn't really work for space marines and some other minor characters, but it has a weedling, annoyed quality that really suits the senior members of the Adeptus Mechanicus. I'll definitely read the next one.

a setup for the series.

This book is to create a setup for the rest but It did make me interested, the narrator is doing his best but it's not fitting for the story

God's in the Machines

Delightful tale about the Secretive Mars Mechanicus agenda as usual Heresy is never far away but the Empire needs their Technological knowledge but when juiced up predatory AI Galatea shows up leading the expedition towards and unknown part of the Galaxy where a Mythical superpoweful spaceship lay ripe for the taking and Loyalties are devided and nothing is what it seems to be...

solid entertainment

A well paced story with plenty of well fleshed out characters pardon the pun. Given that some of them are cult mechanics.

Good story but without a proper ending.

Interesting story, but the ending is not satisfactory, unless there will be more books in the series.

A good mechanicus book for sure!

A lot of people don’t like the mass profusion of space marine books BL comes out with. Although I don’t mind it too much even I found this book to be a breath of fresh air.

The only issue I had was it felt like a beginning all the way through; not a big deal since it is the first of a trilogy, and I loved the entire journey involved, but the drama getting there was pretty entertaining.

Nice book but very shappy in editing

I enjoyed the story and narrator but several times through out you can hear where the different takes have been edited together. You end up with sentences being repeated, overall I counted 5 times. Now I no this isn't much but expected better for black library

Good story, and a somewhat good narritor

The story is great, tho it does lack some explanation for the ending. Not going in to deep in the story its a solid one that senters around alt of well writhen people. The one thing holding the book back is the narrator. He does a good job on some of the people, but everything melts tougher as one big blob of voices. Until the names of the people that spoke I often had to guess who was talking. Not saying he did a bad job, but more a semi good one.
