About this listen

An Adeptus Mechanicus novel.

In the wake of the Great Rift, Belisarius Cawl turns his attention to the abandoned world of Sotha. Once home to the Scythes of the Emperor, it also hides a long-buried secret...and an ancient evil.

Listen to it because:

Cawl is one of the most fascinating characters in the Dark Imperium, and Guy Haley gets right into his memory circuits as he seeks ancient secrets that will blow your mind.

The story:

Belisarius Cawl, Archmagos Dominus of the Adeptus Mechanicus, is the most brilliant mind alive. For 10,000 years he has furthered the cause of mankind, working under the aegis of the Emperor and Lord Commander Roboute Guilliman to prevent the inexorable march of the alien and the traitor. Many call him heretic, but all must recognise the magnitude of his achievements, for who else but he was entrusted to create a new generation of Space Marines?

Who else but the great Belisarius Cawl could even accomplish such a task? Now, in the wake of the Great Rift and the Indomitus Crusade, his ambitions bring him to the long-dead world of Sotha, once home to the Scythes of the Emperor, now a barren wasteland devoured by the vile Tyranids. Accompanied by Tetrarch Felix and his elite warriors, it is here that Cawl believes the lynchpin of his mysterious Great Work lies. But uncovering it is a near impossible task, one in which the Archmagos must overcome an ancient evil that threatens to extinguish the last hope of humanity.

Written by Guy Haley. Total running time 11 hours and 11 minutes. Performed by John Banks.

An outstanding narrative, that provides exciting and fresh insight into previously undelved aspects of the 40K universe while moving along the overarching timeline. Superbly narrated by the immensely talented John Banks, who has an indisputable grasp of these characters and their voices, both inner and outer. Highly recommended.

Can't say much without spoilers, but by the end I found myself loving the main protagonist. Cawl manages to be an utterly arrogant but lovable old grumpy rogue. I can't wait to hear more about this wonderful pseudo-Heretek!

Cawl really stole the show!

Most enjoyable storyline from start to finish into the insights of Cawl. The narration was, well...brilliant. Guy Haley brings you into the narrative from the very beginning and the picture of Cawl helps you to find yourself around Cawl, getting to know the character in depth, the serious side the troublesome side and the mischievous side. I hope there is more to come of Belisarius Cawl.

Cawl forever, forever Cawl

Grate story loved every minute off it. lots of sub plots. The Imperium is evolving into a very interesting place

Brilliant

Though a little bit slow at the beginning, this story soon ramps it up to become action packed and twisty turny with plots and schemes happening all over the place.

And I cried.

I actually cried.

I've never done that because of a book or an audio book and it was strange to think that a scene in this could have that power. One of the characters visits his childhood and it mirrored my own desperate craving to return to those better days, when things were brighter and easier. The author created so much atmosphere in that one scene and should, I think, get a bonus off Black Library for it alone. Anyway, enough of my rambling-buy this audiobook, it's GREAT.

Incredible

An interesting insight into the origin story of Belisarius Cawl. Let's be honest, that's the main reason why you would read /listen to this book.

Actually quite good!
