Summary

He is known by many names - Clonelord, Manflayer, Primogenitor. He is the epitome of deceit and perversion, and feared by man and monster alike. Once the Chief Apothecary of the Emperor's Children, the madman known as Fabius Bile possesses a knowledge of genetic manipulation second to none.

Now a renegade among renegades, he is loathed by those he once called brother, and even the most degraded of Chaos Space Marines fear his name. Exiled for his dark experiments, Bile has retreated deep into the Eye of Terror, leaving a trail of twisted abominations in his wake. But when a former student brings word of the ultimate prize for the taking, Bile is unable to resist being drawn once more into the cauldron of war. For in seizing this prize, Fabius Bile might yet discover the one secret his has been unable to unlock...the secret which will prevent his inevitable doom.

Good but could be better

Overall it's a decent book, with an interesting plot, and the narrator is pretty good. However, I found much of it tedious and I often lost focus then realised I'd missed something important and wasn't sure what was going on. At no point did I think, "I don't care what happens next," but I often wondered if I could skip a couple of minutes. The action scenes are good, and in my opinion the greatest strength of the novel is the descriptive passages, which mostly range from good to excellent, but I wouldn't miss some of them if they weren't there. The dialogue isn't so good. A lot is just boring, not advancing the plot, not adding to the atmosphere, not telling me anything new and interesting about the characters, and not being funny or otherwise entertaining. I also feel like the book didn't do all the characters themselves justice. Fabius Bile is interesting and fleshed out enough, which is the most important thing, Oleander is ok but a bit boring, but many of the others have unfulfilled potential.

My review probably comes off as more negative than positive, but ultimately I was listening to it for the exciting action scenes and grisly gruesome bits, both of which are excellent. I'll probably read the others in the series, just not as audiobooks so I can skim the boring bits and/or refer back if I get lost.

Vividly Grotesque and Intriguing

Excellent voice acting and narrating. Enthralling story with beautifully vivid imagery. A enjoyable 40k novel delving into the infamous 3rd legion and Fabius Bile.

Good start to the series

This is a very interesting series.
Not great but interesting.
Bile is a different kind of "hero" that keeps on keeping on.
Works ok as a stand-alone experience but still not better to have some previous reading on 40k under the hood.

like Fabius the book falls short of perfaction

it was an ok book, some of the bits were interesting with a look into how apothecaries operate and are perceived within the traitor legions. However, I did find it to be an exceptionally slow book that took quite a while to get going. it did have it's moments and there was some interesting characters but overall it felt very middle of the road

Simply amazing

I love the lore and the books are good but the audio books take you there. The voice acting, back ground music and just the story itself.

Good story, Decent reading

Occasional mispronounciation of words but otherwise good pace and solid story. Could chalk it down to local idiolect
