Summary

When his body is hideously damaged in an enemy attack, it looks as though Inquisitor Gideon Ravenor's promising career would be abruptly brought short. Now, encased in a life support sytem that keeps him alive but forever cuts him off from the physical world, Ravenor utilises his formidable mental powers to continue his investigations. Along with his retinue of warriors and assassins, Gideon Ravenor fights to protect an Imperium he can no longer see, hear or feel.

Fantastic Novel, Fantastic Audio Book

Really enjoyed this not only as a novel but also as an audio book.
Toby Longworth is amazing. The voices for each character are good.
Dan Abnett knocked it out of the park again. The climax of the book feels like a film!
An excellent start to the Ravenor Trilogy.

Good listen

Narrator fantastic as always. After the Eisenhorn series this is a slow burner whilst the story is set up. Some great set pieces though and a good finale made me hungry for the next part...

A great read

Loved it. Gave me a good inquisitor fix after I finished the eisenhorn trilogy. Same style and feel

One of the best performances I ever heard

Loved the performance. The voices may not be to everyones likeing but its easy to distinguish the individual characters. As for the story its ok with a few twists but mostly builds for the future. If your on the fence, plunge right in to an interesting world.

Requires a high degree of prior knowledge

Going into this book I was unaware that it was a continuation of the Eisenhorn series, which meant that it suffered even more from a problem I've often encountered with other books in the 40K universe. There is a huge expectation of prior knowledge, not simply for the general world and species but quite specific character types are named without any subsequent explanation or description.
This book was also completely vague about stakes or the characters motivations. Only at the very end of the novel was it made clear why the main crew were persuing a particular investigation. That said the final third of the book did involve a pretty fun action sequence.

excellence from both Dan Abnett and Toby Longworth

Another brilliantly written book that captures the essence of the Warhammer worlds. Toby Longworth narration brings the story and characters alive as always.
