Summary

Things aren’t always as bad as they seem. Sometimes, they’re a lot worse.

Kate Fox has just defeated her ex-husband in the race for Grand County sheriff, but there’s no time for celebration. Instead, she’s called to the railroad tracks just outside of town. The train engineer is dead. His conductor is in shock. And Kate’s gut is telling her this is much more than just a horrific accident.

The victim's widow is behaving oddly. The neighbor’s story doesn’t add up. The victim had recently made several enemies - and they all have motive for murder.

As Kate works to solve the case, she knows she has to trust her instincts - even if that means disagreeing with State Patrol Officer Trey Ridnour. With the stakes high and the whole town watching, Kate uncovers a plot darker than she ever imagined. The clock is ticking, and Kate knows it’s up to her to bring the killer to justice...before tragedy strikes again.

Enjoyable listen.

I’m quite enjoying this serious. The American narrator isn’t as annoying to listen to as some of them can be.
The story is good too.

Sheriff Kate Fox is great!

The more Kate Fox novels I listen to, the more vested I am in the story arc. She's not "Walker, Texas Ranger", but she's determined smart and resourceful. Who needs martial arts skills, when your related to most of your county?

Held my interest

This is the second in the Kate Fox series. I enjoyed this story even more than the first. Narrator Megan Tussing does a great job with various voices and emotions. The story is set in remote Nebraska so a lot of ranch, cattle and local flavor. If you liked CJ Box Joe Pickett series for the setting and flavor of law enforcement in the Big Sky I would recommend giving this series a try. The story is told in first person, Kate, so at first I was a bit annoyed by her musings and analogies but she has grown on me.

Good series

Follows book one well with the ongoing story of a resilient Kate Fox. I love the storyline and descriptions of the rural life of a Midwestern Sheriff.

Fantastic Series

I love Kate Fox! She's a strong, independent female character. This series is so good! Baker's writing is down to earth, but full of suspense. must listen/ read!

Rookie Sheriff

Entertaining story of a rookie sheriff’s antics. She did however get the job done. In spite of the odds.
