Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

From the bestselling author of The Neon Lawyer comes a gripping thriller about a prosecutor confronted with the darkest part of her past and the worst fears for her future....

Fourteen years ago, prosecutor Jessica Yardley's husband went to prison for a series of brutal murders. She's finally created a life with her daughter and is a well-respected attorney. She's moving on. But when a new rash of homicides has her ex-husband, Eddie, written all over them - the nightmares of her past come back to life.

The FBI asks Jessica to get involved in the hunt for this copycat killer - which means visiting her ex and collaborating with the man who tore her life apart.

As the copycat's motives become clearer, the new life Jessica created for herself gets darker. She must ask herself who she can trust and if she's capable of stopping the killer - a man whose every crime is a bloody valentine from a twisted mastermind she's afraid she may never escape.

Nearly gave up.

The premise for this story attracted me to download a book in the first place. I particularly like the legal proceedings. However I nearly gave up listening several times as the plot became more and more contrived. I finished the book really because we’re in lockdown and so why not!? However, you do need to suspend a lot of disbelief and just accept the twists and turns!

Really enjoyable

This is a truly great story, from the characters to the plot. The narrator does an excellent job or bringing the story to life. The twists are not easily forseen and the back stories and characters seem particularly pertinent to the smooth telling of the book. The one thing I particularly liked was that the author presented the facts and evidence, instead of informing the reader of what they should be thinking or assumed judgements. This to me shows a true depth of knowledge and ability in their craft of storytelling.

Excellent

Good story and actually believable. Being in Law enforcement in the U.K. I find that books don’t always portray the characters in a life like way and the stereotypes become annoying. This was good. In the U.K. prosecutors are independent and therefore would not investigate cases so I can’t judge that, and the simplicity of how she found her evidence was so easy a child could find it. However if the investigation bit was real life, it would have been an incredibly boring book! I really enjoyed it

long and boring

The narrator was good, and made it easier to listen too. The story for me was too long. It didn't need to be this strung out. It could have been much more to the point snd concise. One part in the court chapter made me wanted to poke my eyes out! I couldn't wait for it to finish.

Dark…

Fantastic hook at the start. Well narrated. Plenty of tension. Bingeworthy. Looking forward to the next in series.

fantastic...clever well researched plot

this starts slow but quickly gets gripping and while the plot is a little out there, the legal system it features is sufficiently dysfunctional to make this believable.

recommended!

Finally, a thriller worthy of being called that!!

I listen to an average of 3-4 audiobooks a week and have been disappointed in quite a few lately. I love psychological thrillers and this one definitely fit under this category
It is a well written thriller with lots of unexpected twists and interesting, likable, smart characters.
The narrator is excellent as always.
I devoured this book in a day.
I agree with another reviewer, I liked the fact that there were no unnecessary “F-bombs” nor explicit sex scenes.
I will most definitely read more books by this author.

Another five star Methos book!

I want to thank Wayne (Matthews, NC ) for writing my review!!!!
I second everything he said in his review. Ditto to all of Methos books in my library. And again for all the twists in this book and the amazing totally twisted ending.
Very HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A Killer's Wife

I would recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of TV shows like "Criminal Minds" or "Law and Order". This book was a mix of courtroom drama and the search for a serial killer. It was not gruesome like a lot of these types of books are, but instead was more of a psychological drama.

The story takes many twists and turns along the way and the way that the author kept the reader guessing throughout the book up until the very end kept my attention throughout. This book approached the serial killer aspect from a unique (at least to me) angle, focusing a lot on the family of the serial killer and really bringing them to life. The author did a great job in weaving this tale and I will definitely look for more of his books.

The narrator, Brittany Pressley, did a great job in her performance and really added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. Her voices for the different characters was perfect and the killer's voice had just the right amount of creepiness to it to make it more realistic.

A powerful legal thriller!

All of author Victor Methos' audio novels are in my Audible library and I gave high ratings to most. This is a special novel in that it has more gravitas than the earlier ones. The very end is really special; it's a major plot twist. I look forward to the next novel in the series. Brittany Pressley's narration is perfect.

The best book!!

I listened to this last year when it first came out. I actually put it on my "Best of 2020 Books" list. I just re-listened in preparation for the 2nd book that just came out. Excellent!!!
And Brittney Presley does an awesome job narrating. Now, onto book 2!!

Just OK

The writing and the editing were very good but the story itself is hard to swallow. The wife of such a killer so very involved in the legal process is just not going to happen. Jessica, the main character is on again, off again with her skills and thinking. Sometimes she has it all figured out and other times someone else points her to what she missed and was so obvious. Having a husband that she constantly goes to the jail to ask for help is beyond belief. All in all it was an interesting read but not very realistic.

Brittany Pressley was just OK as well

It's a tiny bit mystery and a whole lot of drama

Waaay too much narrated feelings, waaay too little action. A couple hours in, I vacillated on whether or not to even finish...because I was hoping for action or suspense, but instead, the story's protagonist was constantly pouring out her emotions. Constantly. All throughout the book. During second half of the book, I felt like the author was trying to show off his knowledge of the court system...and teach it to the reader, too. How did he do this? By having characters explain things that the other character would already know; thus, the explanation was clearly for the reader's benefit, which I found wholly annoying. On the bright side, Ms. Pressley did an amazing job narrating.

Excellent continued suspense held

I did peg the story line almost to a T but nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the book. Great twists. My all time favorite was the back & forth bantering scene in the courtroom with the objections! 😅 CLASSIC! (Been there! LOL)

I do recommend this book. A quick, fun, easy read. 👍

Suspenseful

Brittney Pressley has to be one of the best narrators, her ability to change her voice n caltureeach character makes it a pleasure to hear. The Killers wife is suspenseful couldn't stop hearing it sat in my car listening even though I reached my destination. This book won't disappoint...
