Story
Thousands of crew are reported dead, including the ship’s captain. Reluctantly, the young XO, Galvin Quintos, will be taking command of the fleet's crippled dreadnaught, the USS Hamilton, while doing his best to bring fleet survivors back to Earth. To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Summary
After the recent near-destruction of the USS Hamilton, Captain Galvin Quintos has been lying low, getting the USS Jefferson ready for service.
In the midst of refurbishing the vessel, he gets a call for help from his former XO, new starship captain Gail Pristy. The Varapin have lured the Ninth Fleet into a devious trap, and it’s not long before Quintos has his orders to hurry to the rescue. But the Varapin have a colossal new warship - one that puts anything the US Space-Navy has to shame. Even after Quintos assembles a crew, he’ll still need to pull a few rabbits, along with a few Symbio Poths, out of a hat to have any chance of surviving the coming battle. And Quintos’ one last hope - reuniting with a past enemy - may prove as dangerous as fighting the Varapin themselves.

Interesting Premise
The series is enjoyable and for those that love space, aliens and the future it’s worth your time. Only one thing bothers me and that’s that the author routinely repeats the definitions of simple terms a couple of times in each book. (ie: HUD). Not a terrible thing but becomes annoying when the narrator re defines a term used earlier in the book or an earlier book.

Gripping
I started this series when I was looking for a book that requires no thinking. I found this series did that and was also entertaining.
The story moves along fairly fast particularly from the middle to the end of the book. The author did manage to surprise me and take the story in an unexpected direction. It is always fun to be surprised. I am looking forward to the next installment.
The book is nine hours and thirty-five minutes. James Patrick Cronin does a good job narrating the book.

This is the last book in this series I will get
I thoroughly enjoyed the USS Hamilton series, including this book 4. However, I just learned that book 5 ends in the middle of a battle – a cliff-hanger in the true sense of the word. I’m out. Frankly, I believe ending a book on a cliff-hanger is lazy writing. Rather than getting the listener to buy the next book in the series, (book 6), because the writing is so good, the author forces the listener to buy book 6 so he/she can see how book 5 ends. There's nothing in the advertising for book 5 that it’s only half a book – that the story ends in the middle, and I’ll have to buy another book to find out how book 5 ends. I only learned that fact from the reviews. Lazy writing - write a book, and then cut it in half and release it as two books, without warning the reader.
So, this book - #4 in the series - was very good and did not end in a cliff-hanger. But I'm not moving on to book 5 etc. because I will not support a lazy writer who tricks his listener into having to buy more books.

Book Review of USS Jefferson!
This is book 4 of the USS Hamilton series and it grabbed my attention from the first word till the end! It was full of action, love and mystery! Would liked to have more of the gaming deck in the story. What happened with the simbiopods at the more than made up for the lack of it in the story! Great narration of the story by James Patrick Cronin! The author Mark Wayne McGinnis wrote a fantastic story. Love reading or listening to the series!

Another great reading
This book includes fun, new angles and has another good lead in to the next book. Keeps the lackluster non flashy endings of the previous books. The enemy dropped like flies and we could have used a bit more losses for the good guys.
