Story
Five years ago, the human race became independent, as the Alphan Empire conceded it could no longer sustain its grip on Earth and withdrew, casting an unprepared humanity adrift on an interstellar sea of troubles. Since then, humanity has struggled mightily to secure its position in a galaxy full of hungry predators, many of whom see Earth as nothing more than a prize to be won. Now, one of the galaxy’s superpowers has set its sights on Earth, launching a covert campaign to weaken and isolate the human race before it moves in for the kill.

Story
Starting a war with an enemy 100 times stronger is insane. It’s desperate. And it’s Earth’s only hope. A massive alien power looms over humanity, claiming Earth as its territory and humanity as its slaves. The Hegemony has already taken over one colony, yoking hundreds of thousands under their brutal rule. Every tactical exercise, every war game, and every simulation gives humanity zero chance in a defensive campaign.

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Summary
Five hundred years ago, when Earth was invaded and forcibly integrated by the Alphan Empire, the human race discovered it was not alone in the universe.
Over the years, humans have grown used to their position within the empire, serving as soldiers and spacers for alien masters as well as building a place in the universe for themselves. But now, in the aftermath of a violent interstellar war that shattered the power of the Alphans, humanity has rediscovered its pride.
Humanity wants to be free.
Facing a war they will lose even if they win, the Alphans give humanity its independence once again. Humanity stands alone in a hostile universe, facing alien threats that regard humans as nothing more than servants or weaklings; easy meat for armed conquest. If the human race cannot learn to stand on its own two feet without its masters, it will rapidly discover that it has traded one set of masters for another. If they lose the coming war, all hope of independence will die with it.

Could have been great ,good story line but
The author went way to far in talking about how people we’re thinking about things and then took it over the edge , you kept saying to yourself give it a rest.the main story line is ok
And normally I like this author .

Really good story.
This is a book designed to set up the future stories.
This is a well made story with long world building and a lot of exposition. The exposition is done well and doesn’t feel like a lecture or that the characters are stupid.
There are times when there did feel like there was more information given then necessary. The slow pace of the first half of the book strikes badly with the rapid pace of the second half. I would have liked to see a steady acceleration to the rapid fire action at the end. There felt like a gap in the middle of the story. Maybe the middle was edited out? It didn’t feel bad just the ending felt rushed. Again not bad but it could have been better.
Overall a good book with little to critique.

Good solid space opera
Entertaining overall. However, almost every action one of the characters takes is preceded by an exhaustive review of the options/scenarios open to happening. These "reviews" often take more time up than the event.
