Story
Geary knows that some political factions in the Alliance were just trying to get rid of him when he was assigned to escort a diplomatic and scientific mission to the far reaches of humanity's expansion into the galaxy . . . and beyond. But he views his mission as both a duty and an opportunity to make things better wherever he can. And when a crippled Rift Federation ship tumbles out of jump space, Geary leaps into action. But the survivors' story isn't completely adding up. As Geary investigates, he finds himself fending off spies and assassins while leading the fleet across space.

The world of Dematr had been locked unchanging for centuries by the Great Guilds, most people living in a world of oil lamps, crossbows, and horse cavalry, the Mechanics reserving to themselves the technology for steam locomotives, rifles, and far-talkers while the Mages treated all others as if they were nothing - until Master Mechanic Mari, dragon slayer and pirate queen, and Master of Mages Alain raised the army of the new day to free their world.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy.

Story
The Federation has endured for hundreds of years, but now it is dying, killed by the corruption and decadence of the Senate and the rising power of military warlords. The shipping lanes are coming apart, the colonists are revolting, and outside forces are pressing against undefended borders. Now, as one warlord makes a bid for supreme power, the entire edifice is on the verge of falling apart.
Summary
Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary may have saved the Alliance only to destroy it in this thrilling and eagerly awaited continuation of the New York Times best-selling series.
Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble.
But after narrowly surviving two assassination attempts when he brings evidence of the misdeeds to the capital star system, Geary realizes that some have decided the easiest way to make the Alliance's problems go away is to get rid of him. He finds himself ordered to undertake a perilous new mission outside of the reaches of human-occupied space while the Senate clashes over the evidence.
Geary's warships must escort a diplomatic and scientific mission across the dangerous, disintegrating remnants of the Syndicate Worlds empire. But even if he can make it to Midway Star System, the gateway to alien-controlled space, Geary will face former Syndicate officials who have rebelled and regard the Alliance with deep suspicion. And that will be the easy part....

It was just so COMFORTABLE to be back on Dauntless
While it was comfortable to re-connect with Admiral Geary and some "old friends," there were lots of interesting twists and turns that kept things exciting while delivering some satisfying outcomes for some very bad people. My only regret now is waiting till the next book. Christian Rummel was great and very consistent. SOOO glad he was the narrator!

It’s — ok
I love this series and the universe that J.Campbell has created. I’ve read every book in the lost fleet series, lost stars series, beyond the frontier series, Genesis fleet series and Corsair. I’m always delighted to see what is happening in this universe.
This story was no different… I was very happy to be spending time in the fleet again. The book certainly satisfied in that regard. I really felt the absence of Emissary Rione in this book.
I will say this story felt more like individual Episodes of a sci fi show, than one cohesive story. There are entire chapters that could be removed that don’t influence the over-all plot (which is hard to pin down).
As always Christian Rummel gives a stellar performance. And makes reading along with the audio book so enjoyable. All the voices are still unique and full of life.
In summation it was nice to be back but the story felt like a late season episodic sci fi show trying to tie a season long arch together but not having enough story to do so. So by the end of the season you are kind of left wondering “what exactly happened?”
There is still a lot of story to tell in this universe and I look forward to reading and hearing the next entry into this series.

Engrossing
Jack Campbell is one of my favorite science fiction writers. I have been hooked on the Lost Fleet Series. Campbell’s battle science is fantastic.
The book is well written. Most of the regular characters have returned along with some new ones. The story gets off to a slow start dealing with the politics of the Alliance. The story picks up from where Leviathan left off after the battle with the rouge AI fleet. In this story Geary is off to Midway Star System and then into alien space in hunt for the Dancer’s home. This story is mostly about the problems of getting to Midway and at Midway on arrival. I cannot wait for the next book and the trip into alien space.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is eleven hours and twenty-four minutes. Christian Rummel does an excellent job narrating the series.

love tge series but severely disappointed in this book. spent so much time waiting for the dancers only to have the book end before they make it there. normally that wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the fact since the books announcement the info all talked about them heading back to deep space. great performance by the voice actor however.

Love the story but the narrator was terrrible.
I knew by the book length that is was going to be an unfinished story. However the big negative for me was the narrator mispronounced the names of all the Midway characters.
Donal Rogero last name is pronounced "ro-har-o" not "ro-ger-o." Took me out of the
story every time. That's just one example. There were many more. It's a damn shame that his performance had such a negative effect on my enjoyment while reading this book.

Another great epic beginning from Jack Campbell
Following in the footsteps of the last book in the Lost Fleet series, this book begins an epic new chapter of Admiral John “Blackjack” Geary’s journey.
With throwbacks to the very beginning of the series as well as new intrigues and challenges, this book, it’s author, and it’s narrator do an excellent job of taking us from Unity to Midway and in between. The story also weaves in and wraps up the Corsair comic series and returning another member of the Geary family to the Alliance fold.
This is the book we’ve been waiting for years to read. The worst part of this book is when it is over!

Excitement and Surprises Galore!
Jack Campbell has never disappointed me! I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in the Black Jack Geary saga! This book has heartwarming glimpses into Geary’s personal life and his character. There are some other interesting people in this story, including one mystery man with a horrifying secret. And oh, there is no lack of powerful people with big egos vying for dominance, either for themselves or their planet or star system!
Can’t wait to read another Admiral Geary story! He’s always trying to live up to his legend! Or is that “live down” his legend?! Actually, it’s a bit of both!
Before I forget, I just wanted to add that the book is well narrated, too!
