About this listen
In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers…someone had to do their dirty work for them, their fighting and dying.
I, James McGill, was born in 2099 on the fringe of the galaxy. When Hegemony Financial denied my loan applications, I was kicked out of the university and I turned to the stars. My first campaign involved the invasion of a mineral-rich planet called Cancri-9, better known as Steel World. The attack didn't go well, and now Earth has entered a grim struggle for survival. Humanity's mercenary legions go to war in Steel World, best-selling author B. V. Larson's latest science fiction novel.

My opinion
Really good story the plot seems to be aimed at generation of gamers ie respawning in real life and the mental strain this process creates.

The most fun I've had in space
What made the experience of listening to Steel World the most enjoyable?
Some people have all the luck. James McGill has the worst luck which lands him in awkward positions frequently, yet he also has the best luck to get through all those situations. The story is exciting and has interesting technologies that are not the standard fare.
What did you like best about this story?
There was never a dull moment. When the setting changes from active battle to quiet social engagements there is nothing lacking in the detail. Nothing that happens around McGill is ever boring.
Which character – as performed by Mark Boyett – was your favourite?
Many characters are great but McGill is one of those who has more flaws than most, but he has a the essential traits that make you want him as your friend. This was my first story performed by Mark Boyett, but he has become my favorite performer and his name will influence my future choices.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are many amusing things in the story which are primarily due to McGill's reaction to his peers, superior officers or even the enemy. The funniest bits are his blunders with women.
Any additional comments?
This entire series is one of my favorites. I was sorry to finish all that was available and when book 6 appeared it was the first one I bought before release.

Interesting start.
A slightly different perspective on a space opera. Characters lacked depth. I look forward to seeing how the series develops.
