Summary

The Alliance has been fighting the Syndics for a century—and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is a man who’s emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief…

Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend…

A good kickoff for a believable scifi

If we consider wars that take long time, and efficiency of modern or future population in dispatching the fellow man, the series gets lot right.

The series kick off in a believable situation where lot of the finer tactical points of command are missing, and what's left is almost wh40k:ish meat grinder. Where tactics and manoeuvres are replaced with fighting spirit and rushing in a straight line.

There's a decent balance of a massive fleet with loads of people, but still distinct and recognizable characters that stand on their personality.

Looking forward to other books of the series now.

Superbly written and performed

I’ve been trying to find a new author in sci fi/space opera genre and haven’t had much look until stumbling upon this series! Can’t wait to get through the rest!

Straightforward Action Based Science Fiction

Fun book. Military Space based Science Fiction. Published in 2006 it now seems a nice throwback. No forced plot twists, none of the current politics that many excellent writers feel they need or just can’t help inject into current Fantasy or Science Fiction.
That itself adds and extra star for me.

Cheesy, Repetitive, Entertaining

It’s an easy listen and pretty entertaining. But you have to get by some very cheesy/cliche parts. Narrator has good voices, but not much inflection, so everything just sounds imperious all the time.

Narrator is hard to listen to!

I made it 12 minutes into this story and it already seems like a story I would like and I want to read more. The narrator however is so monotonous and every word so far has been the same voice tone and level of inflection so it all seems to run together and is hard to pay attention to. I will keep trying to listen but will probably search for my husbands copy.

Great insight into tactical arrangement, organizai

Great insight into tactical arrangment, organiziation, and operation. Good military examples of how a fleet should operate, why tactical and logisitical decisions are made, and what to do with command issues when they arise. I wasn't sure about the premise, but the narration is good enough and the management of personnel was clearly illustrated. Perhaps this should be a guide for managers who have to deal with troublesome employees and staff. Good work, Jack. And I don't know why others complained about the narration; it's fine. At least it's not an uptalking valley girl; it's clear and paced. Will look into the next in the series.

Excellent space battles, but a lot of drama

The space battles are excellent. The battles can involved hairy situations and be resolved with excellent solutions that do not involve space magic like so many other series. It is very tasty.

The downside for me is that most of the conflict involves power struggles between commanders. It seems like almost every commanding officer the main character encounters throughout the series is incompetent and wanting control. This repeating theme is relentless and present through all the books of series. If it is your thing, then it is great. For me, it is just grating and makes it hard to get through the books. It is a great series, I just wished it had more adventure and less drama.

it was ok

it was entertaining enough to keep me interested in the moment, but it was pretty light on overarching plot and the space combat leave alot to be desired. worth a listen to see if its for you.

10/10 would recommend

Excellent book. Engaging plot, well thought out and interesting from beginning to end. Narrator is phenomenal. The entire series, as well as the subsequent series, is just as good as the first book. Details of fleet engagements and other setting mechanics are deep and immersive. One qualm I have with the series as a whole is the mechanics of the fleet conferences held almost every chapter. I just can't seem to understand how it works. If only the author dedicated a paragraph every time the conference software was used to explain how though in reality the room was quite small, the virual imaging allowed for every commanding officer in the fleet to be present, and the room would subsequently expand to display a virtual image of the conference table. I just cannot comprehend how when officers joined in on the conference, the room would enlarge and subsequently shrink as they left, their virtual images popping out of existence. This was a major issue that I hope the author will rectify in the future.
