Summary

Hatch seeks closure to her past. For the woman who walked through fire, redemption comes at a price. For Hatch, that could mean her life.

Hatch looks to heal the invisible wound beneath the twisted scar stretching her right arm. A moment's hesitation on a sand-swept battlefield left her friend and teammate Graham Benson dead. His death leaves a wife without a husband and a child without a father. Hatch sets out to face her greatest fear. Her past.

Hatch finds Benson's widow, Jessica, and her daughter, Layla, living in a small coastal town in Oregon. When she arrives, Hatch discovers the family in dire straits. Her bank accounts had been cleaned out by her brother, a low-end criminal who'd found himself in deep with the wrong people. He stole the money with promises of returning it after a big score.

An offshore nuclear plant comes under siege. And Hatch, honoring her code, sets out to right a wrong while redeeming her past. As the waters rise, so do the stakes. Hatch is a force of nature. And she's about to hit like a Tsunami!

Consuming

I'm a big fan of the Rachel Hatch series and the spinoff with Dalton Savage. The characters in both of these storylines are deep, intense, and believable. There are plenty of heroes here, but no perfect people.

The story in this novel, probably more than any other in the series, has a bittersweet quality. Rachel is still living with Cruz at this point, although she continues to struggle with any decisions about their future. Cruz knows he wants her. But even though Rachel cares for him very much, she's just not sure it's enough to settle down.

Of course, that's not all that's going on in this book-- it's just the part I'm personally hung up on after finishing this remarkable read. But realistically, this story deals with redemption as Rachel attempts to bring closure to the family of a fallen soldier. A death she feels responsible for.

Hesitation also has a starring role in all of the subplots woven throughout this story. Rachel feels responsible for Graham's death because she hesitated. She'll also feel responsible when she hesitates during a kidnapping attempt. Then there's her hesitation with Cruz. She's feeling at odds with the universe.

The authors have again created a furiously paced and complex tale that pulls the reader in and holds fast until the very last breath. The intensity here is equal to the power of the tsunami that gives this book its name. The giant wave that rushes in, leaving death and utter destruction in its wake has its sights set on Rachel, her team, and those she seeks to protect. What, exactly, will be left standing once the water recedes?

Readers of action/adventure, suspense/thriller stories, and romantic suspense will enjoy this story. While it can be read as a standalone, I like starting at the beginning to truly understand these characters, their motivations, and the ghosts of their pasts. Either way, it's a stellar read.

A Great Listen

Overall a great listen and performance. I have listened to all the books in this series and how they get to the end point varies a bit but the end result has become predictable. Reminds me of how Jack Reacher stories begin and end.
