Summary

England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy’s 90th birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and lay to rest her own feelings of guilt. One photograph, of her mother and a woman Laurel has never met, called Vivian, is her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams, the lengths some people go to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and schemers, play-acting and, deception told against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

Intriguing saga

A great story beautifully written.
I’m afraid, though, the narration was so inconsistent. The sample gave no indication of this. Changing voice & accent to represent different characters wasn’t very successful I’m sad to say. It did make listening quite frustrating in parts.... if the saga hadn’t been so very intriguing I think I’d have turned off.

A cleverly crafted book

This is a very gripping tale of three women and keeps your attention all the way through , with a great ending. It flits from 1941 to the 1950s to 2011 to unfold a gripping story.

Unfortunately the narrator seems to have trouble with getting her accents right for the characters, who variously seem to slip into Geordie, welsh and cockney , with a splash of Australian accent thrown in. Apart from this, which somewhat spoiled my listening and made the story a little confusing, this is a great book that I found hard to stop listening to, and I am now going to listen to more of this author's books .

Interesting story idea

Where does The Secret Keeper rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a good book worth listening to as it has many story twists and it comes quite high on my favourite listens list

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Secret Keeper?

The ending of the story is not what you expect from the start, and the family dynamics are really interesting

Food for thought

This amazing story allows the reader/listener to ask questions of their own parents lives.
Probably the best story ever written and given narration, with a thrilling twist at the end.

Kept me guessing

Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret Keeper to be better than the print version?

Haven't read it but really enjoyed listening.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were believable and likeable - even when behaving 'badly'

Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not listened

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the interactions between mother and daughters as the book progressed. The tenderness with which they revised their opinion of her.

Any additional comments?

I had an inkling as to what had happened about mid way through the story but I only turned out to be partially right so this kept me guessing right until the end. The relationship between mothers and daughters fascinates me and in this story that between sibling too was very sensitively handled.

Slow read

Really hard to get into. The narrators accent was very odd and hard to listen to. Have listened to books narrated by her before which were fine

Amazing story let down by narration at times.

Such a fantastic book. Incredibly in depth historically and of the characters. Lots of wonderful twists and turns. I like to listen to audio books I've read in the past so I know I will enjoy the story, that is what kept me with this audio version. For large chunks the narration is near faultless however this is massively inconsistent. I don't want to go in to more detail, as not wanting to be harsh, but fair to say the inconsistencies of narration are very distracting and off putting. A truly wonderful book; now having read and listened to it, the twists and turns are incredible, with wonderful narration for most of the "modern day" sections.

Another brilliant Morton, ravaged by bad narratio.

This is the third KM book I've listened to, narrated by Caroline Lee. As with the others, the story is beautifully written and each character carefully crafted. Morton has a particular knack with historical drama and I have no doubt that if I were reading the paper version, I'd be immobile in my chair until it was completed.

Again, as with The Lake House and The Forgotten Garden, the story is let down by what, in this case is the worst narration I've ever heard.
Lee's random attempts at what seem to be various mashups of every regional English accent serve only to confuse and annoy. Londoners are all given a weird mixture of what sounds like Irish, Cornish and geordie, and for some odd reason, Lee continues this weird accent while narrating, not only when voicing the characters. I wish she'd just stick with her own Aussie accent.
I had known this was likely to be the case, as I've heard other KM books narrated by Lee, but I took a chance because the books are so good.
It would have been so much better if narrated by someone, anyone else.
