Summary

In an enthralling new historical novel from national best-selling author Kate Quinn, two women - a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947 - are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

It's 1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

It's 1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

Rich, Moving, engrossing

By far one of my favourite listens. A storyline that kept me guessing and hoping. Not always a comfortable listen but a rich mix of loss and hope.

Enthralling

It was like the nicest treat you could ever have. There was a temptation to gobble it up but I found myself savouring every word on every page not wanting the book to finish. I'll miss Charlie and Finn but Eve most of all. x

Gripping story of strong women

A brillant book and really well read. I liked how it was about two women and their relationship and also the past. It started slowly but after an hour I couldn't stop listening!

It was a great story and liked all the characters. I found it interesting to read about WW1 and 2. The narrator is brilliant

This was based on a real spy

This was a well crafted story around the true “Alice Network” and the main female spy that lead them in the First World War. I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved the twists and turns of the story.

Great

I loved this book, I particularly loved Lily's character & was thrilled to find out she really existed, & was as good IRL as she appeared here.
The split between 1915 & 1947 worked well & Kate Quinn ensures we care about both main characters despite or even because of their flaws. It also didn't shy away from the realities for women under foreign rule & for female spies & the sacrifices they make. Would strongly recommend.

Best book I’ve read in a long time!

I love this book, it’s an absorbing story that I couldn’t stop listening to once I started! And brilliantly narrated, the narrator brought each characters to life, i feel a sense of loss now that the book has ended.

Enthralling

Beautifully written and wonderfully narrated, this book was an absolute pleasure to read. The narrator really brought the characters to life- Eve and Charlie’s personalities shine through. Impossible to put down, gave real insight into some of the horrors of war yet managed to highlight the amazing strength and resilience shown by ordinary women. Highly recommended.

Crystal clear and diamond deep characters. Reads like a true Story.

My first Kate Quinn book, was very impressed with the freshness of the writing and such well defined and 3D characterization. Could completely believe it was a true story and that she had used transcripts and diaries to write it, but apparently not. Very clever stuff.
