Summary

A sweeping tale of love and loss, the epic saga of the Seven Sisters begins here. From Lucinda Riley, the international number one bestselling author.

Read by Tuppence Middleton (Thirty Days in Paris, The Doll Factory).

Maia D’Aplièse, in her early thirties, gathers together with her five sisters at their childhood home: a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva. They have been told that their beloved adoptive father, the elusive billionaire they call Pa Salt, has died.

Each of them is handed a tantalising clue to their true heritage – a clue which takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . . .

Eighty years earlier, in the Belle Époque of Rio, 1927, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into aristocracy. But Izabela longs for adventure, and convinces him to allow her to accompany the family of a renowned architect on a trip to Paris. In the heady, vibrant streets of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again.

The Seven Sisters is the first book in the spellbinding Seven Sisters series, inspired by the mythology of the famous star constellation. It is followed by The Storm Sister.

Turgid and interminable

I cannot believe I got as far with this as I did before giving up nearly half way through. I thought it would make a change as something light and escapist but it was really tedious. The narrator iis irritating and loses the sense of some sentences and mispronounces some words.

Loved every minute

Having never read anything by this author before I was intrigued by the idea of the book and was not disappointed. I loved the storyline , the writing style and the narrator. It was so believable and mesmerising and I can’t wait to start on the next one in the series. I’m totally hooked.

The Seven Sisters

I was recommended that this series of books were a great read and I was not disappointed. it's not my usual choice, I like murder mysteries, but this book held my attention and I look forward to the next book. Tuppence Middleton is a great reader and captured the voices and accents brilliantly- no mean feat!

Good Company

I really enjoyed the book and it has been great company in the car and on walks. I especially liked the performance and in particular the creepy voice given to Gustavo who make my skin crawl !

An easy, interesting listen

Beautifully narrated, this is an easy listen of 2 fascinating lives. However, it's a little difficult to really get into when the characters are sooooo 'ideal'. Everyone is beautiful, everyone is wealthy... but still a good story!

Soppy

This was not for me, too soppy. Beautiful talented women. "My darling sister". It might improve but I gave up.

A lovely.....

first book of the seven I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book with the various characters in it, going back into the past and then the present. The narrator was very good using different voices for the characters.

Cheap literature

I had been excited to start this series after seeing how highly rated it was. However, the audiobook left much to be desired.

First, the writing. There was no depth to the characters and you couldn't get a sense of anyones personality by the way they spoke. The conversations were stilted and written in an unnatural way, (for example, people said "I wish" and "I mustn't" instead of "I want" and "I shouldn't"). It seems that the writer was too caught up in literature to make the characters realistic. This lack of realism extended to common objects like how Maia used a lantern rather than just the cell phone that she must have to illuminate the writing on a statue.

Second, I was ready for an epic story but the reality was such a predictable disappointment. Cheap love story, pretty girl falls for pretty guy, pretty guy falls for pretty girl cause she's innocent and shows compassion for someone once.

Third, the narrator had a horrible pronunciation of Portuguese words/names which made me cringe throughout the story. I wonder if someone with a better knowledge of the language couldn't have done the job?

Lastly, some things just didn't make sense. For instance, Maia's taxi driver was surprised that someone who seemed Brazilian could possibly have a French surname when in reality Brazil is a mix of so many cultures. The fact that this was accompanied by the taxi driver having the Italian name of Pietro (rather than the Portuguese equivalent, Pedro) added to the irony. Also, Izabela seemed so shocked at things that I'm sure were commonplace in her day, like marrying for status and your in-laws living with you in the family home. Regrettably, Riley did not bother to make her a character of her era.

In all, I struggled to get through this book, always hoping that it'd take a more exciting and less expected route. But it sady never did.

Surprisingly good

I wasn’t sure I’d make to the end of the first chapter but it got me hooked.

Beautifully narrated and wonderfully written. Loved every second. Had me at baited breath quite often. Didn’t want it to end
