Summary

*** A BBC2 BETWEEN THE COVERS BOOK CLUB PICK ***

*** BBC RADIO 4 BOOK AT BEDTIME ***

In Second World War Bath, young, naïve wireless engineer Will meets Austrian refugee Elsa Klein: she is sophisticated, witty and worldly, and at last his life seems to make sense . . . until, soon after, the couple's home is bombed, and Will awakes from the blast to find himself alone.

No one has heard of Elsa Klein. They say she never existed.

Seventy years later, social worker Laura is battling her way out of depression and off medication. Her new case is a strange, isolated old man whose house hasn't changed since the war. A man who insists his fiancé vanished many, many years before. Everyone thinks he's suffering dementia. But Laura begins to suspect otherwise . . .

From Keith Stuart, author of the much-loved Richard & Judy bestseller A Boy Made of Blocks, comes a stunning, emotional novel about an impossible mystery and a true love that refuses to die.

Critic reviews

"Enthralling, a real thing of beauty. Dazzling." (Josie Silver)

"A fascinating, beautiful, heartwarming novel. It kept me gripped from the very first chapter, and I was rooting for Will and Elsa with all my heart." (Beth O'Leary)

"The Frequency of Us is a novel with a bit of everything: a sweeping love story, wonderfully complex characters, and a sprinkling of the supernatural. I loved it, and know it'll stay with me for some time." (Clare Pooley)

An interesting Story

An interesting story, keeps you interested all the way through. A bit disappointing ending but did not spoil the story too much.

Great to listen to!

Excellent narrative, I was not expecting the turns the story took. The historical references seemed well researched. Would highly recommend!

Spoiled by the terrible ‘Austrian’ accent

I wish they’d got a genuine Austrian to narrate the voice of Elsa. The guy just couldn’t do it

Excellent

This story was full of twists and turns; everytime I thought I could guess the ending, I was wrong. The characters were endearing and beautifully read. I couldn't put it down.

Beautiful -art, science, histories and archives

I loved the intertwined histories of this complex story, and became really immersed in listening to it.
I’ve bought the hardback of the novel as well, and would definitely read/listen to more work by Keith Stuart.
I especially liked the connection between the characters and paintings of Klimt, which gave me a deeper appreciation of his work.

Couldn’t put it down

Fabulous production of a fabulous love story. From the start I was fixated on the main characters. Absolutely spell binding and heart warming tale. Would make a fantastic play or tv drama. Off to find more by this author. Nothing about it I didn’t love.

A feel good story

A charming story set during WWII and the present day. Everyone thinks Will is developing dementia as he continually insists his wife is missing – no one has ever seen his wife or believes he is even married. Along comes social worker Laura, who befriends Will and sets about solving the mystery. This is primarily a love story but with a large pinch of the supernatural and is easy to read with a feelgood factor.
