Summary

They say every cloud has a silver lining....

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.

But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.

For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.

Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

OMG KILL ME NOW - That child's voice is unbearable

Great premise ... liked the way Tuppence Middleton narrated the main character - but her daughter SKYE .... arghhhhhhhh, nails on a blackboard, polystyrene in a blender - I tried and tried to settle down and get into it between the inevitable " MUMMMMMMAY" but failed.
I even tried to see it as a comedy voice but it was tooooo toooo much to listen to last thing at night as made me to irritated to contemplate sleep - shame as sounded like a good thriller and had plenty of enticing mysteries but thanks to that insufferable child narration I shall never know ...

Will you see what's happening?

A well performed psychological thriller based on actual historic research! Makes you think. Would you be as trusting? Would I?

Superb

I’ve been finding it difficult, in this time of coronavirus lockdown, to concentrate on reading or listening but this book did the trick for me as I became totally absorbed in the story of Freya and her daughter Skye who move into a too-good-to-be-true apartment in Kensington.

There were elements of this book which reminded me a little of Rosemary’s Baby, although the story itself is nothing like that book/film. It is very creepy though, and the tension builds throughout the book and towards the end I hardly dared breathe. The twists which came at the end took me completely by surprise.

I liked the way that the passages set in 1920 were woven into the modern day story and was horrified to discover during the interview with K L Slater at the end of the book that this was based on a true story, and I googled John B Watson and his Little Albert experiment. Truly horrific, scary stuff!

The narration was Tuppence Middleton was superb and this is a definite 5* listen.

Somebody Stop The Voices!

I'm trying to get into this but I am put off by the narrator - when speaking in her own voice, she is good but when she voices any of the other characters, I either cringe or laugh - it's like a school drama production when students speak the way they think a character sounds, not how they actually sound. This book embodies more cliches than Slater's other efforts so I'm finding it a little humdrum by chapter 9 - I'll give it a few more chapters to see if anything happens.

Very entertaining

I really enjoyed listening to this book.
I listened to it very quickly also as it was super engaging and relatable to me.

I enjoyed the voice of the narrator also. I’m looking forward to listening to more books that have been narrated by her.

The twist is intriguing and I didn’t see it coming.

Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller.

Very predictable

I usually love this author but this was very predictable and one of her weaker stories. it says that it's only available on audible, and it very much has the feel of something that has been cobbled together for a specific project, rather than a book that she has invested a lot of time and effort in. The narrator was good. I understand why other readers might have found the child's voice very irritating but unless you employ a child actor for those parts, I'm not sure it's avoidable.

Unsurprising.

Could see all the twists coming, except the connection to history, which I don't think was hinted at in any way. Husband arc should have had some more in it.
