Summary
The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.
But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.
Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.
It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.
What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…
A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of My Name is Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.
Critic reviews
‘Such a poignant story. Brought a lump to my throat in many places… Will really appeal to fans of Joanna Cannon.’ Karen Angelico, author
‘I loved it! Mabel Beaumont is an absolute treasure… Laura Pearson cleverly, gently, peels back the layers of Mabel’s and her friends’ lives in a way that hurts, then soothes, your heart… An uplifting, life-affirming joy of a novel!’ Emma Robinson, author
‘I absolutely loved this book… I adore an older protagonist who’s portrayed as a real person, with opinions and regrets, and who is feisty and not afraid to speak her mind. The story is like a warm hug – but it had spark and wit and humour too. I loved it, and was bereft when I finished it (far too) late last night!… Gorgeous!’ Clare Swatman, author

Heartache, loss, love and life
This beautifully crafted story, with a gorgeous rhythm, has warmth and depth. The yardstick for me with any book is that as soon as it begins I can see the movie playing in my head - this book didn’t disappoint. The characters introduced into Mabel’s story, through her own loss, add further facets of women’s resilience, inter relationships, love, care, forgiveness and fun - to name but a few!! Loved it.
The narration adds a log fire and hot apple crumble with custard warmth throughout - expertly done.

A wonderful story that might change your life…
Thank you Mabel for helping me too. What a wonderful book, full of lessons but woven into a beautiful delicate narrative. Not too heavy but bursting with moments that can change the way you view the world. Grief, love, loss and friendship. Transcends generations and always present. Very moving.

Wonderful, reflective life affirming.
Beautifully written, a woman of older age reflects on her past life and losses. With courage and supportive new friends she takes the biggest risk of her life and achieves her lifelong dream. Along the way she inspires others. Penelope Freeman read it perfectly, she understood Mabel. A sheer joy to listen to.
I felt I knew Mabel and looked forward to hearing from her every evening. A wonderful tale of women’s friendship and support for each other regardless of age. I highly recommend this novel.

If times were different.
I was immediately hooked the moment I heard the narration by Penelope Freeman. She brings such warmth and character to the lovely Mabel.
The book touches on friendship, death, loneliness, lost loves and what ifs.
It is beautifully and sensitively written, covering an era when things were so different.
It is a gentle read/listen the characters are all so believable and interesting, The book comes across as a little twee in places, but it has a real theme and message to put across.
Thoroughly recommend.

Different types of love
The way people from different generations can be friends. The mistakes we make in life. The way we need to talk to one another. Brilliant book

Really enjoyed this book- not what I was expecting
This was an unusually choice for me. My go to is a murder mystery this was awarded the editors pick and I gave it a shot.
Its a lovely story very well written and narrated. Very honest view on love and companionship. Very much enjoyed this listen.
I would recommend it as long as you aren't expecting drama just a heartfelt reflection on a life.
