About this listen

Beautiful double room to let to single person. Lisa, a troubled young woman with a past, can’t believe her luck when she finds a beautiful room to rent in a large house. The live-in owners are a kind and welcoming couple. Everything is fine until she finds a suicide note hidden in her room. But when the couple insist this man didn’t exist and that Lisa is their first tenant, Lisa begins to doubt herself. Compelled to uncover the secrets of the man who lived in the room before her, Lisa is alarmed when increasingly disturbing incidents start to happen. Someone doesn’t want Lisa to find out the truth. As the four walls of this house and its secrets begin to close in on Lisa, she descends into a hellish hall of mirrors where she’s not sure what’s real and what’s not as she claws her way towards the truth … This room has already claimed one victim. Is it about to take another?©2019 Dreda Say Mitchell (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Psychological Suspense Fiction

Not For Me

I’m returning this one. The narration is ok but the book dragged on and on. I couldn’t warm to the main character and am not in the mood to wait it out and see if it gets better!

Excellent Psychological Thriller

This is the first book I have read by Dreda Say Mitchell and it's a cracking psychological thriller which is et in a creepy old house owned by an equally creepy married couple. The protagonist, Lisa has had mental health issues and is still a little unstable, and as the story progresses we realise that events in her childhood, of which she has little recollection, seem to be the cause of her problems.

The story is very dark and menacing as it progresses to it's shocking conclusion.

I listened on Audible and enjoyed the narration by Kristin Atherton.

gripping, twisty and dark

enthralling and dramatic tale of the very twisted life of a troubled girl.
well written and observed, how mental illness can stem from any background and how the mind is a powerful thing.
Kirsten narrated well and with feeling.

mixed

at first i didnt like this book, i couldnt understand some of the decisions that Lisa (the main character) was making and i found it frustrating. Then more information comes to light and my feelings towards Lisa changed. i started to understand and could relate. By the time the book finished i genuinely dont know how i feel, almost bereft. There is such a build up to what has led to Lisa being in the position she is that i think i feel the explanation for it came almost too quickly.
did i enjoy this book? yes however its left me feeling a bit empty.

A really good read (or listen)

Complicated but I loved it. My second novel by this author (Trap Door) and it proved to be a similar concept, just as twisty but completely my cuppa tea. You will have read the synopsis and I have no intention of adding spoilers - just wanted to say that although you will need to concentrate but in my opinion, it is worth the effort. Only hope that I can find yet another of Dredas work and be equally enthralled.

Gripped

Could not stop listening. Well written and well read. Predictable at times, but then a twist you don't see coming.

Absolutely First Class Thriller

This book with the unpromising title turned out to be a first class thriller. With revelations coming along at regular intervals it became so much more than a story about a spare room with a past. We had characters we could believe in and empathise with. Much helped by Kristin Atherton's excellent narration.

In a bit more detail, Lisa Kendall (25) rents a top floor room in a big house in London. She soon finds that the room and the landlords aren't everything they seemed before she moved in and she is not as comfortable in her room as she hoped that she might be. We gradually learn that the room has a past, the landlords, Lisa, Lisa's parents, previous occupants of the house all have a past.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anybody looking for a good psychological thriller.
