Summary

Success at last! Ahren and his companions have revived the alliance of the Jorathian peoples. But there is little time for celebration, for while the defensive ring around the Pall Cloud is being strengthened with Dwarfish assistance, Ahren and his friends are already on their way to answer the Wrath Elves' cry for help in the Forest of Ire, from within whose depths mysterious dangers are threatening to destroy the Elven forest and all life forms within it. Time is running out, and not only is the Pall Cloud spreading its noxious vapors over an ever-larger area, but the stricken Forest of Ire must be saved at all costs.

If the forest falls, then the defensive ring will fall too, obliterating any hope of victory against Him, Who Forces.

The story is a bit hit and miss

I found this instalment of the 13th paladin series hardwork. If the intention was to demonstrate the slog through the forest of ire then mission accomplished.

The narration/performance is very good. Really good pacing and characters "voices" are well defined.

Some of the story was predictable but also showed originality with some great world lore at other times. However I've found the whole hunter story arc quite tiresome and annoying more than intriguing.

Some of those original story elements really started to drag me in just to have a pointless (and very detailed) fight with the animals that call the forest of ire home get in the way. Yes, I get it....the local wildlife is extremely dangerous. I found myself very tempted to skip past these but couldn't since I had no idea if there was some important story progression tucked inside the hack and slash (there wasn't).

I'm also not sure if it's due to the translation but some words feel a bit overused (brusqely and demonstrative both seem new favourite words). Also the inhabitants of this world have picked up a little french "joie de vivre" and "coupe de grace" pop up a few times.

I'll probably stick with the series but need a short break after this one. It's definitely the weakest book so far and hopefully the story returns to form going forward as overall it's an enjoyable series.

can't stop won't stop,

the way the narrator brings each character to life, the fact that he doesn't have to describe who's talking and I'd still be able to clearly tell who said what, and the story telling is just phenomenal, don't want the books to end, thoroughly enjoying them! if LITrpg is your thing then this is theese are the books to get

Another absolute banger

Once again Torsten Weitze has done it
another very thrilling story continuing on the travelling companions giving their all to save the world, with a very healthy sequel that keeps you interested through and through

Same good characters, okay plot. Waiting for next book

I have binged the 13th paladin books this year and am thoroughly enjoying them.

This instalment however fell short of the standard. The story felt flat and boring, the world building seemed lacklustre and empty after the thousand halls. The events of this particular arc struck me as repetitive, walk here in swamp, walk there in swamp, none of it was noteworthy or even all that memorable.

What got me through was the character interaction and momentum of the overarching plot. Otherwise it was a bit stale & didn’t do much for me, and felt like a filler novel. Still worth a listen/read if you’re a fan of the series.

I’m looking forward to the next book & to continuing the story in more interesting lands.
