Summary

Contains books one and two of Legend of Tal, a sword-and-sorcery, coming-of-age adventure.

A King's Bargain, book one

The legend of Tal Harrenfel is sung across the Westreach, and with each telling, the tales grow taller.

Though he's declared a hero by his king, Tal has never claimed to be more than a man. After three decades of fighting warlocks, killing mythical beasts, and hunting enchanted treasure, Tal has had enough. Running from the deeds of his past, he retreats to his home village under a different name and meets an unlikely companion: Garin, a village boy who dreams of making a name for himself and seeing the world beyond their sleepy town.

When Tal receives a mysterious visitor, both he and Garin find themselves thrown into a sojourn across the kingdom. Soon, they become embroiled in the plots of monarchs, on the frontlines of an ancient war, and at the mercy of a fabled sorcerer. Now Tal must live up to his legend, and Garin must discover his own power, to survive the forces pitted against them.

A Queen's Command, book two

The legend of Tal Harrenfel lives on, and a new song spreads across the Westreach.

Though Tal and Garin overcame one enemy, victory promises to be short-lived. Garin struggles with his inner demons. Tal is haunted by enemies and memories alike. And a long-kept secret has torn a rift between them.

But circumstances force them to continue their travels together. The roads from Avendor to Gladelyl, once the safest in the Westreach, are rife with danger. And Tal is bound to the commands of the Elf Queen whose intentions are unforeseeable. But reaching the elven realm is only the beginning of their troubles, for Gladelyl is in turmoil. The nobles grasp for power. The underclass and Eastern immigrants seek new rights. And an ancient enemy takes advantage of the chaos to turn them all against each other. Now Garin must come to terms with his demons.

Just excellent!

I have not been sleeping well and this book was included with Audible, and I thought I would let it play in the background. My plan didn’t work, because it proved an wonderful story and Derick Perkins is a fantastic narrator. I gave up listening at bedtime and gave it my full attention during the day.

A proper page turner.

It has been a while since I listened to a fantasy book. This has reignited my passion for this genre. Great story, amazing narrator. Can't wait to start the next book.

High fantasy with enough to keep listening

The story seemed overly predictable and most of the lead characters were hard to warm till. certain timings of happening feels rushed especially when it came to action. but generally a good listen for those that want a book to get through a work pass

Brilliant

This book grips you from the beginning.
So much intrigue, friends enemies demons and of course magic.
If you need a book to spellbind you this is it.
Brilliantly narrated by Derek Perkins who brings all the characters to life.

Decent although derivative

Hard as it must be for any fantasy writer, to not plagiarise Tolkien, this book should have themes familiar to any Hobbit.
That said, it's still a good story, and one I will continue with purchasing the next volume.
Oh, I nearly forgot, the narration is tip top.

Very good

Extremely satisfying, at times I was lost and had to go back but it was mostly about the protagonist who had so many different monikers. Narrator was excellent.

A yarn for the dreamers and the escapist

The story is one of sorcery and the development of youth. Its a book keeps you interested from start to finish.

The narration by Derek Perkins is exceptional and his voice and expression lends life and reality to the tale.

Very entertaining

After reading some remarks both good and bad I had to dive into the story myself. After finishing the first book I can say that i really like the performance of narrator - kept me focussed on the characters and give them some extra dimension. Overal i liked the story and will continue listening to it - yes I read better fantasy with stronger story lines and better character building. But for me the story and characters worked nicely. If you’re up for some easy fantasy entertaining nicely told then this will not disappoint.

Great series right up there with Ryan, Abercrombie, Hamilton and Cobble!

Great new series that I would rate in my top 5 authors. I truly enjoyed the book and the orator was exceptionally good. I really enjoyed the first 2 books and can’t wait to start the third.

Wonderful traditional fantasy adventure

Yes, it is in many ways a story that is familiar, but the world building and character development is great. I like the familiar feel of a traditional epic in a new place. I have spent a couple years trying to enjoy books that kept falling short. For me this one got everything right. The characters feel like home.

Enjoyed this read!

it has a lot of common fantasy novel narrative but....... I really enjoyed it about the second book and continuing on. it is filled my last two weeks with very pleasant storyline. the good guy wins just at the right moment! it's so hard to find stories that don't have graphic sex and ludeness. I'm not a prude but I just don't want to get that out of my fantasy novel. I'd rather hear about dragons and swords and heroes. Not all this other stuff that I get every day in the media.

Better than expected

I went into thus book not expecting anything more than a traditional fantasy story but it has more depth to it than that. the characters are complex and the setting well built.

i enjoyed this book most of the time it feels like it just short of a master piece of literature. there kept being places where I would zone out and stop paying attention that I kept having to rewind and relisten maybe that is just me though.

Super good but

Great story and really well crafted…. Except the author’s description or eyes swirling bugs the hell out of me and it’s used every.single.chance.to describe eyes… STOP! Other than my personal annoyance great story.
