Summary

A kingdom in danger, a great betrayal, a boy seeking to redeem his father's honor. Will he succeed in exonerating him and saving the realm from an enemy in the shadows before it’s too late?

Lasgol is the son of the traitor; the man who betrayed the kingdom and tried to kill the king. At the age of 15, he has endured a hard childhood. In his small village in the North, where he’s cornered and hated, his only companions are the mountains and ever-present snow. Yet he refuses to believe that his father is guilty, even though the king himself was a witness to the betrayal.

Lasgol is determined to clear his father's name, and to do this, he has only one option: attend the School of Rangers, a secret place where the respected and feared defenders of the lands of the kingdom are trained for four years. Going there is insane: Hate and death await him. But as the son of a Ranger, he's entitled to attend.

At the Camp he will find himself involved in political intrigues, disloyalties, and fights. He will encounter hatred and fearsome enemies, but also a handful of friends; other novices who are out of place like himself, determined to do whatever is necessary to make it through the first year alive.

This book reminded me of the Rangers Apprentice but more adult themed in the sense that he didn't come across as as a early teens book

Wonderful Story.

I enjoyed every minute of this audio book. The story is good and well developed as well as very creative. The narrator brings the book to life - better than many other books I have heard. I really am looking forward to the other books in this series.

Predictable story with potential

The story is the usual outcast trying to be more type. The world is interesting, the characters are ok if stereotypical, the school bears more than a passing resemblance to another school from a well known book series and overall the events in the story are a bit predictable.

The narration is good with character distinction being mostly very good (once or twice the narrator seemed to voice the wrong character for who was speaking).

The writing is very inconsistent. It seemed to improve as the book went on but just as I had that thought it would trip over itself with some terrible writing that made me cringe ("Let me explain so you can understand!" well yeah....that's what explanations are for). Events also got quite repetitive in their execution, I started getting rather fed up of the words "but" and "however".

It really feels like a YA book and should be marketed as such. A younger audience would be much more forgiving of its shortcomings.

While I'd like to find out how the story progresses and more of the world it takes place in I'm not willing to pay for the privilege. The quality of the writing simply isn't worth the price.

Written by an AI

Performed speedily, as if John Banks wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible

Very shallow romp presumably for youngsters

There was not much depth to anything about this tale. It appears to have been written to a young teenager audience (and as an aged oldie I still enjoy those when well-written) but this sadly was not. It did romp along in a repeating fashion but glossed over what could have been interesting if developed beyond a fast-fix

Can’t wait to see what happens next.

I came across this series by accident due to getting the latest book in my audible fresh releases email. This is a great start to the series, I loved all the characters and it was interesting. Seeing the kind of things they learn to become Rangers. I’m looking forward to continuing with this series. In the future, the Audible narrator John Banks did a fantastic job.

A great heroic beginning

Really impressed with this book. Excellent narration brings the best out of this seemingly generic adventure. Does the adventure surprise? Not really, but as a fun escapist book it ticks loads of boxes. Definitely would recommend for younger readers starting to enjoy or exploring the fantasy genre.
