Summary

The Manipulator

I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.

I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.

But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.

He's always there, watching and waiting.

And I can never look away.

Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow

I didn't mean to fall in love.

But now that I have, I can't stay away.

I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.

The way she undresses...

I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.

And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Not even when she begs me to.

While not required, it is highly suggested to listen to the novella Satan's Affair first.

Author's Note: This book ends on a cliff-hanger. For CWs, please check the author's website.

Okay, but not great

I have to say I’m a little disappointed with this book. The H is supposedly a good guy with grey morals. As a vigilante that has an entire organisation devoted to save victims of trafficking and sexual abuse as well as destroying the ones responsible and taking part in the trade. However, he feels perfectly fine stalking, scaring and, even graping the love of his life. Our h, on the other hand moans and complains ALOT about all that he puts her through yet she does nothing but make a few police reports and taunt him, in fact she kind of eggs him on quite a bit. WTF 😳🤯😵!!!! The 2 of them should be a bit more sexually open to accept their kinks and explore it in a safe and CONSENSUAL way.
The entire romance is peculiar, in a bad way, it just didn’t make sense to me.
I really enjoyed the entire solving the mystery of her grandmother’s murder. Also, the rescuing of the victims was really good and action packed.
Not sure I can be bothered to know what happens after the cliffhanger ending.
The narration was outstanding and the duo narration is always superior then other types.

One of the best books I’ve ever listened to.

I LOVED this story. It is unbelievably well written and the first book in a while that I haven’t got bored of.

It’s so sexy yet the story is developed enough that it isn’t smutty. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Intense

I had no idea what to expect going into this but the hype was real. I have a new appreciation for dark romance and will be exploring more of this twisted addictive genre. Reccommend!

Hot

There is always the petit girl with the bad boy, a hater to lovers story. But a good one. I like the backstory of the characters and that the story is more than love and spice.
For those of you that have trigger, check TW.

entertaining

was very entertaining, but feels like the writing is lacking and often felt like a YA book where writer didnt do research on some specific things they mentioned and how they actually work irl

Too disturbing

Didn't finish this one; sorry but not prepared to give time to reading about a woman who didn't report a serious assault. Plus the male mc is supposed to be a good guy but is doing exactly the same things he is hunting others down for.
I don't blame the narrators who were both excellent.

My god this chick is stupid

The story is fine and does a good job of being suspenseful.

But damn this main character is frustratingly stupid. She is so clearly in danger but time and time again does nothing to help the situation. For the love of God woman, have som self preservation, please!

It went from "Alright" to "Oh no" quite fast

There are more comprehensive reviews for this book out there than this, but I'd just love to say that I was fooled by some people telling me this book was "dark, inetersting and sexy". And to me only the first description rang true. If you like rough erotica combined with little plot-substance of YA-level writing, this might be for you. And no judgement there. This was just not for me in any shape or form.

5 star ⭐️

I want to be descriptive and articulate in my review of this book but honestly I’m destroyed at present and need time to collect my thoughts and my heart.

Spoiler alert 🚨

It ends on a cliffhanger but I’ve been assured the next book will help you get over this.
If you love dark romance that messes with your moral compass you will fall for Zade.

As always check the TW they are there for reason this is dark and unsettling.

H D Carlton has officially messed with my head a second time now and I feel that her books will stay with me far longer than any others have.

The performances of the voice actors 5 ⭐️ these two where perfect for this book and I truly can’t wait to listen to the second book.

I’m off to get a strong cup of coffee and not judge myself for enjoying something extremely well written.

Seriously, check those TWs. Not for the faint of ❤

Okay so this book is definitely for mature adults... 21+. And the trigger warnings need to be taken seriously. This is a full on dark stalker romance with some murder mystery elements. A lot of darker themes are tackled here and as a reader you need to be smart about knowing what you're walking into. I disagree with the sheer number of poor reviews on this book strictly due to the fact that the readers were unprepared for the disturbing and dark content.

I am rating this book 4 stars because the plot and story are very intriguing. Not to mention the cliffhanger at the end which had me beside myself. Some of the sexual content in this book was tough for me to read, I just don't think stalkers are sexy but Zade did grow on me as the book progressed but I still found the romance tough to swallow. The murder of her great grandmother was such a cool addition to the plot. I found her little journal entries to be riveting and the fact that Adaline had more going on than just her stalker made the character feel more rounded.

This is not a book I'd recommend you read at night. It gets spooky and eerie at points which could give you some effed up dreams. Don't say I didn't warn you!

okay, listen.

I've read the book series twice. (if you like super dark and kinky stuff thatll make you question your mental well being, this is for you!)

-but let me tell you!!!! the MOMENT I heard my man Teddy's voice being the narrator, it didn't matter if I've read the series or not. I HAD to buy the audiobook. I need this man to narrate my life.

Rape… full out rape

Literally rapes her with a gun while he’s sexually assaulting her and tells her to suck on a gun. Disgusting

Some interesting elements but fairly juvenile

This author could develop into a real talent but this reads a bit like fan fiction. She does write great angry sec scenes and their attraction was intriguing. Plot elements were were pretty cliche and very Qanon. That could be ok if better executed.

I’m still not sure of this book. There are parts of this book that make my skin crawl. Idk… this one will have me reeling for a bit.

Incredible, but mind the TWs.

Mind those TWS! they're not for show.

Absolutely fantastic book, I cannot wait for the next installment. I think I might just buy the actual book so I'll get to know what's gonna happen, I don't know of I can wait. S tier performance by Teddy Hamilton and Michelle Sparks as per usual. It was as terrifying as it was tantalizing and I may never recover. I usually HATE books ending on a cliffhanger, but this feels earned somehow.

Overall incredible. Just, be sure you're not getting in to something you'll feel bad about, some of this stuff is pretty gnarly.

Very “Twilight”-esque Plot with romanticized stalking

the book can be split up into three parts: 1, crazy stalker; 2, learning more about crazy stalker, 3, falling in love with crazy stalker. The author tries to make you like the stalker even though everything he does is very similar if not the same to the exact people he’s supposed to be stopping... by the time Adeline started falling in love with Z, he had already done so much messed up stuff to her while thinking what he was doing, was justifiable, but at the same time, Z was disgusted by, and actively working to thwart pedophile, human traffickers, and rapists. He stalks her, rapes her, sexually assaults her, manipulates her and more. By the time she started falling in love with him, I already hated him, and saw no justification for the way he treated her. His character is irredeemable.

Separately, I had an issue with the way the male voice actor said “pussy“. It always sounds like he saying poo-sea lmao

2 stories in 1. And they don’t mesh!

Really really wanted to love this book!
And I did. Except I loved one of the stories. The one with the dark anti hero stalking and getting closer to his victim. The haunting, the mystery. I loved the Dubious Consent thing.

BUT!
There’s a parallel story where our dark knight is also a hero chasing pedophiles, witch, u know, is a good thing!
The problem is that these seem like 2 stories and the author couldn’t choose.
The hero fighting trafficking of kids and women just doesn’t mesh with the anti hero.

This should have been 2 separate books!

Also, unfortunately, the parts about pedophiles flaunts the false craziness that basically every rich person or person in government are pedophiles, except of course the extremely rich hero trying to crush the pegophile rings…

Pedophelia is one of the worst crimes out there but… The books idea about how pedofile rings work are just weird and wrong in so many ways. (Look, I’ve worked with these issues!!!)
And by doing so it actually hinders us from seeing real pedofiles, the people living next door that we like and so on, the teacher, the friendly guy in church, the one who doesn’t look like a predator.

So, had it been the haunting, the dark anti hero and the roses this book would have been a 5!!!!

Unfortunately the author didn’t have a good publisher who could have made this 2 different books (and helped sort out the “the entire government are pedofiles” thing)

I wish someone could just sort the book out!
I would have loved to love it!

I wasn’t able to turn it off.

It’s been awhile since a book has held my attention so. I don’t usually like books that end in a cliffhanger. First book by the author, but I am a huge TH fan. I love his voice. Both narrator’s made this book go large. I am definitely referring this book to my Audi girls!
