Summary
Shallow Hill is where souls suffer slow and miserable deaths.
When River McAllister escaped from Shallow Hill, she left her innocence behind—and some of her sanity. Now, she's rebuilding her life with her dream man, and life couldn't be better.
Ryan Fitzgerald is everything you'd want in a man. Attractive, rich, an aspiring lawyer, and would do anything to keep River. But that's not the only thing that attracts her. It's his attentiveness and possessiveness, but maybe not so much his temper.
When her relationship takes a dark turn, Ryan's estranged brother, Mako, is the only one who sees it. He knows exactly what Ryan is capable of, and it's not the first time he had to be a knight in shining armor.
River came from Shallow Hill, though. She's never needed saving before. What Mako doesn't see is that River is perfectly capable of taking care of herself.
The only one who should be scared is Ryan....

Hard to listen too but good
This was a hard book to listen too because of triggers but the narrators brought it to life and made you feel all of the emotions while listening. Considering who the author is I can't be surprised but it was good and truly believe you got the full experience.
Yes, there is a happy ending but the journey is dark, twisted and brings out emotions that leave you feeling bereft of happiness, this book hits the hard truths and reality that some people actually live with. It brings out the cold wash of reality that this actual exists in the world and its not sunshine and roses.
It's brilliant how the author can bring out the anguished feelings and wrap it up I'm a bow at the end. Well done!
**Yes, I'm aware of the trigger warnings but I like to throw caution into the wind and read a book outside of my comfort zone. Welcome to life, not everything can come with warnings, sometimes you just have to take a chance, I'm glad I did**

I wanted to love it but the story fell short
Just really didn’t enjoy this. The characters didn’t feel like they could be real people. The storyline felt disjointed. Parts dragged on and then other bits didn’t get the time they deserved imo. Michelle Sparks is great - love her accents.

Heartbreaking but amazing!
I read this book last year so already knew how much I loved it however nothing could have prepared me for the audio version! Parts of this book was so difficult to read and I really didn’t imagine that it would be even harder to listen to - but I was proven wrong. I absolutely love the narrators, they did an amazing job bringing this story to life.
Please check trigger warnings as this book is very dark and traumatic.

DNF AT 75%...
For me, this audiobook had a lot of personal triggers, which I struggled with, but I also felt it was so long winded and dragged.
I must admit I struggle to understand why this is classed as a dark romance. However, that may be because this has a lot of HEAVY TRIGGERS, which are real-world traumas for me.
Read the trigger warnings & protect your mental health.

Convincing manipulation
Never having been in an abusive relationship you wonder why women stay. This is well written and Jason Clarke makes the monster so credible I’m beginning to understand. Riveting stuff. Loved it.

Heavy but good
Not my favourite HD Carlton book (I have read them all!). But still enjoyable. Loved the narrators.

Perfect!
I will try to keep it spoiler free, but some of my description might hide a couple of spoilers, so please read with with a warning.
This book depicts exactly the mindset of a victim of abuse. The author has done a great job at describing the feelings of a victim, the results of the manipulation of an abusive partner, the way they twist and make the victim feel guilty about the situation they are in and on top of that, deserving of their misery.
I love how this book made me feel. I felt angry at the victim not being able to leave the situation she was in, sad at the characters' backstories, admiration for all the survivors out there in the real world, and grateful for the redemption in the very end.
Once again, I love the author's writing style and the performance of the narrators at the audiobook. I recommend this book 100% to people who like to read about hardcore things like that, but please pay attention to the trigger warnings before you do.

Infuriating
I'm halfway through and the story just goes round and round. The constant disappointment that she doesn't wake the hell up is infuriating. The story doesn't have any good points or happy moments, it's pure abuse and sadness. I won't be finishing.
