Summary

He's a hockey god...and she's the one who got in his way.

I had a foolproof plan.

Finish college playing the best sport on earth. Hockey.

Get drafted by an NHL team.

Make my senator father at least a little proud of me.

I was on track to do just that…until Violet Reece and I collided. Literally.

Turns out, my plan didn’t account for a night in jail–and the news articles that followed it.

Everything fell apart after that.

New school, new hockey team. And a resentment like I’ve never felt before directed at the girl who set me off course.

Lucky for me, she attends this new school of mine.

And there are a thousand ways to ruin her.

Brutal Obsession is a sizzling, dark college bully romance. Our hero does not grovel under any circumstances.

Listener discretion is advised.

The female lead was honestly pathetic...

I love dark romance but this one was unbelievable in a bad way and annoying most of the way through. It only got better near the end but I never got to enjoy the initial "dark" part for the beginning (and middle) of the story.

The male lead was just eyeroll immature, with barely any signs of the resistant attraction we all expect. And the "hot and cold" aspect we also expect was very misplaced so it felt even more like he genuinely didn't give a shit about her unlike appearing to "not giving a shit" in front of others but actually being affected, even just slightly, internally.

The female lead was honestly pathetic and gave off major "bimbo" vibes. That's the only way I can describe her. I think most of us are familiar with the kinks and dark desires that are common in these types of stories and I also personally have experience of my own but her lack of intelligence was highly grating and the way she dealt with her dark side and discovering it, was unrealistic.

For most of the story it seemed as if they weren't even her own desires but her physiological reactions (which can have nothing to do with kinks nor desires as it can simply be a body's natural reaction to physical stimuli regardless of whether you are enjoying yourself or hating it) gave her the "Oh! I came, that must mean I'm into this and I like it! Do I? I guess I do." reaction and monologue, making her a character who seems like she cannot think or decide anything for herself. Her kinks and desires seemed more brainwashed and manipulated into her rather than her own hidden desires (as they try to implicate within the story). That was quite disappointing.

She also didn't start having feelings for him for little bits here and there as she got to know him better, it felt more like "Orgasm must equal feelings/love.". Which was like "Girl, you literally just got sexually assaulted and it didn't even seem like dubcon because besides the orgasm, everything else was describing that you were hating what was happening!". Completely didn't understand this train of thought at all. 😩 I'm into dubcon but I pass on rape so I just had breeze past that disaster.

The side characters were confusing af. One minute the care for the female lead, the next, they are next level hateful and then back to liking her... I got whiplash from them and could never get a feeling for where they truly stand.

The female side characters were better but not very interesting.

The characters need major work but I believe that the way this author writes is very appealing and attractive so I hope for improvement in the future.

Title has word Brutal in it for a reason

I read a lot of negative reviews about the forced sex in this book. There is a warning on this for a reason. Those scenes have to take place to show the violence, the lengths and changes in the characters. It is titled Brutal Obsession for a reason. There were some good twist and turns other than the interactions between Greyson and Violet.
Teddy Hamilton did an awesome job but I did have a bit of a problem with the masculine voice done by Heather Firth. Teddy made Greyson sound like a normal guy not some”bad” guy which to me made Greysons character creepier. Heather’s version made him sound like “the villain”. I know it’s often hard for women to do a male voice and vice a versa but that’s why only 4 on performance.

Brutal Obsession is the perfect title

Brutal Obsession is exactly like the title says. This couple and their relationship was brutal but yet the obsession so strong they just couldn't leave each other alone. I normally enjoy a dark bully romance but Grayson was just a bit too much for me. For 3/4 of the book the exchanges between the couple had me questioning how they could possibly redeem everything. Then it all just clicked and I ended up enjoying the last part of their book. The bit of suspense was a nice addition and kept me intrigued throughout the story. Overall I liked it but there were a few moments where I was definitely questioning continuing.

Horrible— do not waste your credit

This was SO BAD. So stupid. I’m so upset I listened at all. Who is forced to give a BJ to 2 guys and then tells a friend who says (cheerfully) “wow, you DID have a big night”. HORRID. Really awful. Unbelievable and stupid. I Want my credit back.

Pass don’t buy or read

I don’t care if I’m the only person. This book is disgusting. It 2022 the male leaf is a abuser and predictor. If this was real he’d be on trial for sexual assault. Maybe I didn’t listen enough, but I’m not interested in any story where the males are glorifies for sexual abuse, and the females allow it to happen. Absolutely the worst book I’ve listened to.

New favorite hockey romance

I had already read the book prior to listening to this audiobook & yet I was still glued to my phone/headphones. The narrators did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life! I seriously could not get enough of hearing Teddy deliver line after line of Grey's dialogue.

This is definitely in my top five books of the year & I can already tell there will be multiple re-reads/listens in the future. The plot has so many twists and turns, between Violet's possible st@lker, the intense relationship that is forming between Grey & Violet, plus their past... lets just say there really isn't a dull moment.

I highly recommend this book, just make sure to check the TW/CW's before starting.

I loved this!!

No one is more shocked than I am by how much I ended up loving this. I went into it intrigued by the hype it’s been receiving but anticipating hating this based on reviews I was seeing on Goodreads and tik tok. This seems to be a pretty polarizing story - people either love Greyson or hate him. I enjoy bully romances and always have, but there is a caveat to this: I am absolutely a girl who loves groveling. And on top of that - there are certain lines the hero can’t cross. I was skeptical because I kept hearing that Greyson doesn’t grovel and for what it’s worth… he doesn’t but the way he and Violet connect just made sense.

I enjoyed watching them push each other to their limits. I wish I would have seen a little bit more bite and resistance from Violet, but overall I enjoyed her character arc. I liked how she was open to her new reality and how she was shaped by her trauma. And I loved the way Greyson was absolutely obsessed with her. And for what it’s worth I enjoyed the scene with Steele as well 🥵 I cannot wait for his book and I’m so glad I took a chance on this book.

Fantastic!

Just give it a try. I almost didn't read this because of the reviews. It sounded like he bullied her so bad and she was weak. I can guarantee that is and isn't the case and if you stick with them you won't regret it. This book was hot and sexy and asf. Vi and Grey are perfect for each other.
