Summary

A number-one best seller in several categories with over 14,000 five-star ratings on Goodreads.

From the number-one New York Times best-selling and award-winning author Colleen Hoover comes "A stand-alone romantic thriller that is tragic, creepy, and brilliant!" (Mel Reader Reviews

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Sexy. Twisted. Consuming.

Due to graphic scenes and mature content, this book is recommended for listeners 18+.

Don't believe the hype.

Not sure how this received so many 5 star reviews. I found the plot completely implausible and the characters deeply unlikeable. I had figured out the twists well ahead of their reveals. I persevered through this book on the strength of the reviews but wish I hadn't. I found the mills and boon sex scenes far too frequent and unnecessary also. Returned for a refund.

mostly just a vehicle for sex scenes

This story sets up an intriguing storyline. A ghost writer (who happens to be young and beautiful, of course she is, there are no ugly heroines in storyland) gets a commission to finish work by a catatonic writer, whose husband is also young and beautiful. Whilst there she finds a manuscript ostensibly written by the catatonic writer. unfortunately not much happens thereafter. except lots of sex, and lots of descriptions of sex. there is no intrigue around the husband which is a massive missed opportunity to write a ‘is he good or bad’ character, and the children and nurses have no personalities at all. the circumstances that keep the main character at the house are contrived indeed, and it bothered me that she never got around to doing any of the ghost writing she had been employed to do as she was too busy spying on the wife, and chasing the husbands tail. then the denouement is rushed, also contrived, and very far fetched indeed. Im not returning it, its just about worth a credit, but really is all rather silly tbh.

Not for me

I don't read psychological thrillers very often but I was intrigued by the set up of this novel. The narrators were good and the story is fast paced and absorbing. The book has an interesting structure (book within a book) and some of the twists were interesting but the plot was too predictable. I also found the characters shallow and unlikeable. Their actions were not believeable in the least.

Do not understand the hype at all

Thought it was a weak story, boring. One dimensional characters and as if author got bored and quickly added the most far fetched ending to escape it. Really do not understand the hype about this book. Disappointed.

Too dark

There are some very dark moments in this book which I couldn’t get over and felt disgusted. I wish I hadn’t read it.

The voice over for the husband was very irritating.

Didn't live up to its promise

This book started so well. The tension kept ramping up and I was really enjoying the whole concept. So much so I was prepared to overlook the fact, which usually annoys me, that the players in the story existed in a vacuum. No friends and no family, the occasional mention of a person outside of the immediate action was soon dispensed with. No relationship with parents, or mothers and fathers dying unusually young. All was going well and then we get to the ending. And I was disappointed. Ms Hoover took the easy path and I really thought from the preceding chapters that she wasn't going to do that. Why? Ms Hoover can obviously write and kept the pace and tension nice and tight through the whole book. What a shame - to be promised so much but ultimately not to deliver.

Verity tries to be Rebecca and disappoints

Maybe I’ve read too many thrillers but this book never managed to surprise me. Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca looms large over this novel but Hoover never comes anywhere near that league. It’s all so predicable, you can see the ‘twists’ coming miles away and the characters remain completely flat and unlikeable. *spoiler* The writer tries to compensate the weak plot with graphic sex scenes and the most taboo murder of all: that of a child, but all that made me disengage even more. It is all so implausible, I have no idea where all the 5* reviews come from.

Don’t waste your time

The hype made me listen to it. And first few chapters, I am fighting the urge to just stop. The main voice was immensely annoying. She was oddly theatrical, with Corrie, with Jeremy’s and just doesn’t match the character especially Jeremy. The Verity voice should’ve just done it.

Quite predicting, the story and the characters. I was so distracted how the voices were just completely out of characters.

I finished the book, but I wish I didn’t. What a complete waste of time.

intriguing but skip if triggered by child abuse

I really liked this book and it is only my 2nd from this author. It seemed predictable at times and other times made me want to throw up from the child abuse. I did not see the end coming which puts a different perspective on the whole story but it was hard to keep going during some of the parts because I just can't take stories with children being harmed in them. I'm glad I did stick it out and the narrator's were fantastic but I will not be reading this again. I recommend this book to thrill junkies but not to anyone who is sensitive to child violent situations, either emotionally or physically.

Just poor writing. I wanted to love it. I had to read it full through to see what the hype was, but damn. Just a weird, sick, poorly written mess.

Other reviews totally oversold it!

is Audible paying reviewers now? Who are you people and why did you love this book???

I wasn’t awed. I wasn’t surprised. There were no surprising plot twists. Lastly, I am certainly NOT going to spend any time thinking about this book now that I’ve finished listening to it.

It’s nice everyone else found it riveting. I found it pedestrian, if not downright predictable.

A dissatisfy bummer of an audio book.

There are much better mysteries out there

This was mediocre at best. It's main redeeming quality is that it's fast paced. But none of the characters are likable, the basic premise is ridiculous, so many things are introduced as if they'll be important but then never returned to, and the end falls into the "a letter explains everything" trope that is just lazy writing. For much better mysteries, check out Tana French or Jane Harper.

Way too much sex

If you don't like to hear about someone's sex life over and over and over and over again, don't buy this book. It wasn't even good sex scenes. Just lots of F*&^ing. I started fast forwarding through it after awhile it was so bad. The twist at the end was pretty good. I didn't see it coming. That's the only reason the story got 3 stars from me. The narrators were good.

Almost a 5 Star book, but sadly not

This is a hard one to rate. I loved the whole book up, and didn’t want to stop listening. If you would have asked me to rate it anytime before the last hour I would have given it 5 ⭐️. However, I was very unsatisfied with the ending. Like really? It could have been great, instead it was like, huh? Ok. I call bs but ok. And I’m sure that was the authors intention, but I didn’t care for that approach. When the story has you drawn in from the beginning you expect to be wowed by the ending. Instead it got a shrug. I guess if you don’t normally listen to suspense you’ll probably be satisfied with it, but being that I like dark and suspenseful I was left wanting. I would still recommend the book however as I said it did keep my attention which is hard. Just don’t get your hopes too high for some huge BELIEVABLE plot twist. I liked the first narrator. I don’t care for the narrator of Verity, but she was a lot less annoying in this one than some of her others. She was tolerable.

The performance made me buy the actual book.

The voice actor used here was awful and I couldn’t listen further than Chapter 5. She sounded like a knockoff Siri and just lowered her voice to represent other characters. Yeesh.

4 Stars but I wish It wasn't 6 months late

I need to start by saying that authors who release audiobooks 6 months after the eBook are doing a huge disservice to the audiobook fans. With 6 months of waiting and all the hype about how crazy this book was I had VERY high expectation and I'll be honest I was left underwhelmed. If I had listened when it released and hadn't had 6 months of hype, I know I would have LOVED this book. I truly hope since this author is going completely Indie now that she will do some research on how all the other hundreds of Indie Author do simultaneous releases so us Audiobook people aren't missing out on the excitement and twists that she loves to give us in her amazing work.

Now Verity.... I really enjoyed the writing style of this story. Loved that it was dual POV so we got both "sides" of the story and I loved the characters, Colleen did an amazing job at making me hate Verity. I've listened to everything written by Coho and I love that she is dipping into other Genres. Throughout this entire book I was waiting for the twist, I knew what I thought and I was 1/2 right but the explanation was the surprise for me.

The narration was good. Vanessa Johansson is new to me and at first I wasn't sure out her voice but she was perfect for Lowen. Amy Landon isn't a favorite of mine normally but I think it's more about casting then her work and she was cast perfectly as Verity!
