Summary
For humans and vampires, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always–always–guard your heart.
The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.
But winning won’t be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.
Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father’s crown…and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.
But there’s no room for compassion in the Kejari. War for the House of Night brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home.
In a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love, Raihn may understand her more than anyone, but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall.
The Serpent and the Wings of Night is the first book in the Crowns of Nyaxia series, a heart-wrenching romance full of dark magic and bloodthirsty intrigue.

Gorgeous fantasy
It took me a little while to get into this but I came to root for the strong female main character and found the romance incredibly believable. The end was a twist I didn’t see coming. Really well constructed once you get a couple of hours in, with three dimensional characters and empathetic narration that makes you feel every emotion.

great story, average writing.
The over all concept of the story is good! It did have me hooked to see what would happen next. The way it is write however is not great. It feels like a school writing assignment, phrasing is repeated a lot, It is cringe and doesn't feel the most realistic at times. I enjoyed it and would recommend it but I wouldn't read it again.

Ok story
To be honest, it wasn’t bad, but definitely wasn’t great. Narration was pretty good except for any sections involving the characters to shout, it was an awful held back attempt, made me cringe every time. But the accents and different tones were enjoyable and easily differentiated characters

Tedious for 90%, 10% interesting twists
I found the opening to be intriguing and that's why I gave it a go. there was something unique about thr prologue that was enough for me... but I quickly moved to 1.75 speed...and before the middle of the story I was listening at 2.5+ speed just to get through the doldrums of the plot.
The overall impression was weak tea...fine in a pinch but not how you'd like it to be. Wouldn't read again and don't think I'll be picking up part two, sadly. Harsh review, probably.
There was a lot of "let me info Dump some history at you" without much emotional input other than you're told "it must have been so sad and emotional". Character phrases get overused to the point of satire for the reader. Sub / supporting characters are sadly lacking in depth and realism beyond one female character who is connected to the main character. There is some effort put into world building but you never seem to be able to lay it out on a map as places get mentioned once or twice and they just feel like token expansion packs for a world we don't delve into really. Maybe book two offers more but? There are some parts in the "slums" I guess you'd call them that feel more gritty and real but ironically, for a vampire novel, very little to sink your teeth into.
Spice... 1/5... and not very tense or passionate... uncomfortable imo.
violence 2/5 and out of nowhere super descriptive. not complaining about that but it was just inconsistent.
Interesting points of this book mostly happen at the start and literally the last 2 chapters.

Interesting
I thought I'd found something that gives you a different idea for a story and the way it was reading the first three quarters, the story gave me the ember of hope.
But even though the dance of the edge ending was excellent and exciting it was pernickety and the predictable ending was monotony based so it could rumble into another book.

Not too bad… that ending, I didn’t see coming.
It wasn’t half bad. Of course I’m a little bias as it’s Not Fourth Wing however it does serve to starve off the fiening cravings for (Forth Wing) #3… it does help while while us minions ( lol) wait with abated breath.
Meantime… I must say this story is more dark than suspenseful action. The Vampiric trope here are more horrific and does remind one of Bram Stocker’s take on a little infamous Translovenian Count A little creepy, however very good. Here the vampires are the villains, a plague and scourge on mankind we’ve come to know them as, refreshing actually.
So far so good. I’m looking forward to catching book #2 as that one should be way more interesting.
Happy reading 💕
