As riots erupt on the streets of Lahore, Inspector Faraz returns to his birthplace, the red-light district in the ancient walled city where women still pass on the profession of courtesan to their daughters. Plucked from it as a small boy by his influential father, Faraz has kept his roots well hidden. Now his father has sent him back: to cover up the murder of a young prostitute. I’m not yours and you’re not mine. That’s what I say to his dreaming face as I watch the shadows of his dark eyelashes dance by the light of a Tilley lamp. It’s not the first lie I’ve told myself. When I was 16, I wanted to fly. I was going to take off like an angel from heaven and leave the muck and madness of Northern Ireland behind as I struck out across the west coast of Donegal, heading straight for America. Nothing but the Land of Happy Ever After would do for me. It was him I blamed for clipping my wings.

Summary
A Killing in November is an Oxford-set crime series of surprising twists, troubled pasts and a dynamic duo who are brought together by a mysterious murder investigation.
Ryan Wilkins grew up on a trailer park, a member of what many people would call the criminal classes. As a young Detective Inspector, he's lost none of his disgust with privileged elites - or his objectionable manners. But he notices things; they stick to his eyes. His professional partner, DI Ray Wilkins, of affluent Nigerian London heritage, is an impeccably groomed, smooth-talking graduate of Balliol College, Oxford. You wouldn't think they would get on. They don't.
But when a young woman is found strangled at Barnabas Hall, they're forced to.
Rich Oxford is not Ryan's natural habitat. St Barnabas' irascible Provost does not appreciate his forceful line of questioning. But what was the dead woman doing in the Provost's study? Is it just a coincidence that on the night of her murder the college was entertaining Sheik al-Medina, a Gulf state ruler linked to human-rights abuses in his own country and acts of atrocity in others?
As tensions rise, things aren't going well. Ray is in despair. Ryan is in disciplinary measures. But their investigation gradually disentangles the links between a Syrian refugee lawyer now working in the college kitchens, a priceless copy of the Koran in the college collection and the identity of the dead woman.
A Killing in November introduces an unlikely duo from different sides of the tracks in Oxford in a deftly plotted murder story full of dangerous turns, troubled pasts and unconventional detective work.

Talented narrator, enjoyable yarn
I picked this first because Matt Addis is a really good narrator and I was really impressed with the Chris Ould books -also I like detective stories set in Oxford.
I totally enjoyed listening to all the accents so well done in the other books he has narrated and here again he draws you into this cleverly written story by Simon Mason-
not just cleverly written, but with lovely descriptive language and a fine sprinkling of humour too.
Book 1 it says, so hope there will be more :)

Fear this may be the waste of a good character
I grew to like these characters, I just didn’t really believe them.
Had Ryan’s character been toned down just a little this could have made the start of a good series. As it is, if he makes a comeback it will just add to the unbelievability of the whole set up.

Excellent!
I usually rate the audiobooks I've listened to when they finish but I think this is the first time I've felt compelled to write some more detailed comment. I read a lot of police/detective thrillers and this one kept surprising me with the quality of the writing, the excellent narration, and the strongly drawn central characters. There's a knotty plot and it's told with some humour but I don't usually burst into tears when listening to stories of gruesome murder and it's a testament to how much Mason put me inside these characters' heads that I was so moved at points. I was thoroughly absorbed and I wish I could straight on to a sequel!

Utterly implausible
One of the main characters is completely unbelievable. Supposedly a police detective, he is violent, abusive, has some kind of cognitive disorder which involves poor impulse control, lies to his colleagues and superiors, uses pejorative language, is anti-authoritarian, amoral, and blatantly breaks every police procedure he encounters, getting repeated 'last' chances. Just absurd. Useful for the plot, but it would never happen. It was just too improbable, and I stopped listening before the book was half way through.

Superb. Storytelling at its very best
Simon Mason’s new crime series kicks off in fine style and the narration by Matt Addis is exceptional. The characters are nuanced and fleshed-out through this book and I was fully on-board with every single one of them, including Ryan Junior! I can’t wait for the next instalment of this series as I was left wanting more even though this book rounded off well. Very well done, Simon and Matt…and Audible for the experience.

Brilliant book
At last, Oxford detectives with a real difference, and likeable with it. One Wilkins was likeable from the start, the other gradually became more likeable as the story progressed. Very funny in places, violent in others. The characters were believable, and so was the plot, which isn’t always the case. And great narration - you could tell the characters apart. I am now waiting eagerly for the next one - it’s a long time until next January!!
