Summary
TWO MISSING BACKPACKERS. ONE VAST OUTBACK.
DS Lucas Walker is on leave in his hometown, Caloodie, taking care of his dying grandmother. When two young German backpackers, Berndt and Rita, vanish from the area, he finds himself unofficially on the case.
But why all the interest from the Federal Police when they have probably just ditched the heat and dust of the outback for the coast? Working in the organised crime unit has opened Walker's eyes to the growing drug trade in Australia's remote interior - and he becomes convinced there is more at play.
As the number of days since the couple's disappearance climbs, Walker is joined by Rita's older sister. A detective herself with Berlin CID, she has flown to Australia - desperate to find her sister.
Their search becomes ever more urgent as temperatures soar. Even if Walker does find the young couple, will it be too late?
This deeply atmospheric thriller is the gripping opening of a new crime series for fans of Cara Hunter and Chris Whitaker.
Shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger Award 2023.

Fast paced Aussie noir
Really enjoyed this. DS Walker is on leave and gas gone to stay with his seriously ill grandmother. Two backpackers go missing and he’s drawn into the enquiry by local police.
Well developed characters and a plot that’s action packed, plausible and full of twists. Great sense of overwhelming and oppressive heat and isolation in the remote setting. Atmospheric and narration throughout is excellent. Looking forward to more.

Amazing debut … I’d be surprised if this isn’t turned into a film/tv show. Breathing life into a tired gene. Can’t wait for book 2 !

Enjoyed my first Patricia Wolf
There are lots of pretty average crime novels but this was definitely a good one! Very atmospheric, well written and great characterisation. Great narration as well. Have already started on the second in the series and look forward to more.

Atmospheric & gripping,,,
Excellent atmospheric plot, a thoroughly gripping plot that draws you in so you feel like you’re there and can feel, breath and taste the red hot dust and cruel heat of bush dry rural Queensland - where you need to be tough and savvy to survive.
I really enjoyed the excellent narration by Adam Fitzgerald, as he brought all the characters to life brilliantly.
An excellent audio experience - leaves you wanting more…
