Perfectly adequate escapism. Nice story, good characters. Good descriptions. Not too keen on the narrator, but powered through it; why she felt the need to shout "CHAPTER" at the beginning of each one is a mystery....

Not my cup of tea
I did not relate to the heroine, I found her quite annoying, which may also be to do with the narration. The story was so obvious and juvenile - I’m sure 14 year olds would love it, not for me.

A really wonderful story
Absolutely loved this, even though it made me cry at times! :-) We are honoured to share our garden with Hedgehogs every year, and have done for the past 20+ years.
It's wonderful that accurate information about them and what can be done to help them has been woven into such a fantastic story.
Can't wait to listen to the next book in the series, and will then be impatiently awaiting the release of the forthcoming third installment too!

not my usual choice of book but I'm glad I tried it. it had me laughing and crying but thoroughly enjoyed everything minute.
Samantha's battle for acceptance from her mother was dealt with very sensitively and the journey to find herself and her place in the world. the characters where all brilliantly explored and the narrator did an excellent job with voices and delivery

The women in Samantha life!! Ugh.
I never write reviews but this book has gotten me lit up! I’m only a few hours through this book and the relationships Samantha has with her female family members make my stomach turn! They are so self centered and downright mean! How can a mother treat her child the way Samantha is treated?? Her mother is a bully! She puts her down and blames her for everything any chance she gets!! …and her cousin is a spoiled self centered brat who turned her back on her the moment things didn’t go her way! Samantha just keeps taking it like a punching bag! Samantha, … is so lovely and sweet! She cares so much for people and wears her heart on her sleeve…. And because she is NOT a confrontational person and only wants others to be happy, she literally sacrificed her own happiness! The only reason I’m still listening is to hopefully see Samantha finally stand up for herself!! ….hopefully get some redemption. Reading the other reviews though I’m sure I will be greatly disappointed! I literally find myself yelling and cursing out loud at her mother and cousin for being such hateful, selfish individuals! I will update once I finish the book. I’m hoping the book will redeem itself. ☹️

Somewhat annoying storyline
SPOILER ALERT!!! Wow & not in a good way. I normally enjoy Jessica Redland's books, but this one grated on my nerves. The toxicity of the women in Samantha's life was astounding. Every time a window opens for them to change & get better, nope it gets worse. Not to mention as sweet as Samantha is, she is such a glutton for punishment. I have to say I only kept listening to it as I really wanted to know if the relationship between her & her mother would change. NOPE!!! Thankfully the men in her life seem to be great role models. I'm hesitant to finish the set wondering if there will continue to be toxic relationships that just sour the storyline.

Loved it ...
... even though the narration didn't fit. Think of the head cook on Downton Abbey. Her voice was much older than what you would expect of the 20-something storyteller. Otherwise, audiobook is delightful and I'm glad I kept listening past the first chapter.

The MOTHER
I’m only part way through. I never write reviews but I just want to warn people. The mother in this book is atrocious. Mean is too nice a word to use. I don’t know if I can continue reading. Why Samantha doesn’t stand up to her is beyond me. But worse than not standing up to her she seems to go back over and over for such verbal abuse and outright venom from her own mom.
SPOILER: so much drama over Samantha simply not admitting she was in love with James??? She gave him up for Chloe. Just seems incredibly far fetched. I can’t decide whether to read to the end.
I like the other characters. I’m just not sure I like them enough to continue.
Venting over.

A true surprise!
I've been branching out, needing a break from my usual genres, and this book (and author) caught me completely off guard. While I don't usually write reviews, I did see a lot of negative ones and for reasons I found a little silly, and had to put in my two cents. While some topics, such as the abuse that occurs here, can make a lot of people uncomfortable, I felt that it made the characters more real and relatable because I grew up in a similar environment. The picture perfect families and circles of friends in many books can occasionally put me off. It hit home pretty hard in many ways, but I still found a great deal of beauty in the story as well. I can't wait to read more about Hedgehog Hollow.
