Summary

Introducing your new crime thriller fix: Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed.

DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and dogged pursuit of the truth means his conviction rate is the best on the force. So when his police colleagues dismiss the death of a man as a squabble among Bristol's homeless community, Detective Sergeant George Cross is not convinced.

Who was the unknown man whose weather-beaten body is discovered on Clifton Downs? Did the tragedy that led to a life on the streets also lead to his death?

As he delves into the dead man's past, Cross becomes convinced that to catch this killer, he needs to solve a cold case murder from years before. A murder that someone has got away with for 15 years....

Intriguing story and well narrated.

I found the narrators style and voice perfect for the character who seemed to find his Asperger’s the issue for others, not him. Lots of twists and I enjoyed getting some of them right. A good listen.

Very enjoyable and well narrated.

Great plot with a good build up. Although of a serious nature, there were many laugh out loud moments for me. It was also informative regarding the Asperger’s condition.

More to it than a run-of-the-mill Whodunnit

Excellent story, writing, characterisation & narration. A very satisfying listen & will definitely help myself to another in the series.

Well drawn together story

Good plot with a clever twist
Excellent narrator make for an engaging listen
The detective Cross comes across as both preposterous and endearing. He fits the story well.

The portrayal of Asperger’s

I enjoyed this story about a detective who is an Asperger’s sufferer. I imagine this is how people like him function in the world. Their unique talent was clearly portrayed in this twisty journey novel. very enjoyable.

Interesting lead character

Original concept around the lead hero detective, and human relations around the cop buddies. Authentic. Loved the interview psychology

Fantastic Main Character!!

Adored listening to this on dog walks and piecing together. Really liked the main character and his foibles.

Don’t be put off by the subject

It had all the makings in the intro of a story I would normally give the pre-verbal body swerve to as I’m partial to a bit of action which is lacking in this particular story. However it more than makes up for its no-guns, no action by the engaging well written story and narration with its neurodivergent main character . In a word it’s a breath of fresh air, so looking forward to the next one.

Enjoyable and creative

The story is well played out and mostly interesting although I did skip some of the Aspergers explanations. They were heavy-handed, repetitive and far too frequent. They also made the interviewing of suspects laboured.
I like the narrator’s voice and pace, although it is sometimes difficult to distinguish who is speaking during a conversation.
While completely unrealistic to think that this behaviour would be accepted from a police officer, I am happy to go along with this as a work of fiction. I like the characters, and I really like the story which is well through out and creative. The author’s stye of writing is good and I will look for more of his work.
