About this listen

Who Killed Charlie Birch?

Charlie Birch is dead. A knife, thrust into his chest, has effortlessly sliced through his right ventricle, quite literally breaking his heart, which given his past behaviour, was perhaps a fitting end.

An unexpected chain of events had placed a desperate Charlie and many of the Middle Mound villagers in the White Hart pub that morning. Then Charlie decided to hold them all hostage. That was his last mistake.

DS Sally Carter had been sent to Middle Mound to investigate an abandoned bus and several missing villagers, but instead finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Having grown up in the village, she knows many of the suspects from her youth. All the clues are there, but will she catch the killer?

Who Killed Charlie Birch? is the first in the Murder Tour series.

A clever locked room mystery

Ok, this book is not in my normal reading genre but as a huge fan of the author’s Meredith & Hodge series as well as Bearing Witness I thought I might enjoy listening to this one too. Having claimed a free code from the author, thanks Marcia, I immediately added this as next on my reading list.

I was advised that this is nothing like Meredith & Hodge and sure enough it isn’t. This is more of a cosy/locked room mystery. It is written in a clever style where each chapter deals with the statements of the suspects and goes through how they happened to be in the pub at the time of the murder of the very unlikeable Charlie Birch. Everyone had a reason to dislike him but who killed him?

The story is easy to follow, well-paced and well written with Lee Beddow providing the same excellent narration as the M&H series. The whole idea of it being a murder tour worked really well and opens the door for possible future books each with their own self-contained murder/mystery. I look forward to listening to the next one.

I really enjoyed “Who Killed Charlie Birch?” and would highly recommend it.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

Definitely something very different

To begin with I really enjoyed the story. It was so different from the usual story format but eventually I found the individual stories rather long winded. I definitely prefer M K Turner’s series with Meredith and Hodge more enjoyable
