Story
Shadowvale isn’t your typical small town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse. Vampire Constantin Thibodeaux was cured of his sun "allergy" when he moved to Shadowvale. Now he runs the local bookstore, which is really just a sideline to filling his own library. Books, unlike people, are far more forgiving of his prickly nature. But he doesn’t care if people don’t like him. He is who he is. And he’s happy. Well, he’s content. Okay, he’s…fine.

Story
When 49-year-old Belladonna Barrone’s mobbed-up husband does her the favor of dying in a car accident, she thinks she’s finally free of the crime family she unwittingly married into. Then the boss tells her that she has to complete her husband’s last job before that freedom is truly hers. No big deal, she figures. Until things go south in ways she never imagined. Suddenly she’s thrust into a whole new world that makes the mob look like kindergarten. Vampires and werewolves are real? How is that freaking possible?

Summary
Shadowvale isn’t typical small-town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse.
No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family but doubts he can last much longer.
Fledgling witch Emeranth Greer is determined to escape her past and make a fresh start in Shadowvale with the aunt she’s never met. Her aunt and the town prove to be far better than she imagined. There’s no way Em is leaving this magical place. Especially when staying means more time with the handsome Deacon.
But when Em’s troubled past catches up with her and nearly destroys the romance budding between her and Deacon, her instinct is to run again. Except there’s magic in the mix now, and the town won’t let her leave. Only Deacon can save her, but can a cursed man clear her name...or will her history destroy them both?

I have been searching for a "cosy mystery" featuring witchcraft for as long as I can remember. I went through many different series but was never satisfied until I found this. perfect for late 20s/early 30s reading when you're not in the moof for anything too serious. The narrator did a fantastic job! can't wait to read the next one!!!

A left at the door review of Trouble with Witches
The Trouble With Witches is the first book in a new paranormal romance series by Kristen Painter. As the first in the series, you will not need to have read anything by Kristen Painter previously to enjoy this book.
The story is somewhat unique in the paranormal universe as unlike with Kristen's (and other author's) Towns that masquerade as one thing to hide the existence of the paranormals who live there, Shadowvale is completely hidden from the human world. The town calls those who need a safe place away from the rest of humanity.
What I liked about this book:
The magical creatures you won't find in the rest of the world.
The magical curses.
The characters we really met were developed, and I hope to see others get more development through time. Since they weren't really essential to the story I can accept that they were not developed more fully during the story.
The story did have a few surprised along the way; although, I did guess part of the plotline very early on.
What I didn't like about the book:
I had a bit of a hard time really connecting to the heroine of the story. It took about half the book before I really started to like her.
The background of some of the main characters had to be drug out by force, and even then some of it didn't seem genuine.
Sex: None
Violence: None
Language/Cussing: Mild if any
Religion: None
Mystery: Mild
Blood/Gore: None
The story did take me a few chapters to really get into, but once I did I enjoyed the reading of it. There weren't really any scenes that made me cry, and a few that made me laugh. Overall, the book gets a solid 4-star rating. It's entertaining if a little bit difficult to get into, and the story was fun to read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes clean paranormal romances.

Finding Her Place In The World
This is now my favorite series of Kristen Painter’s. Now I want Jayne Frost to visit Shadowvale lol. I loved all the characters. I want to know more about the mysterious tiger, Thoreau. Hope the next book will be coming soon. The MC Em really went through a lot in life. Her past is chasing her everywhere she goes. Will she find peace at her aunt’s, whom she’s never met? Little does she know, this isn’t a normal town. And she has lived her whole life not knowing she is an actual witch. Shadowvale is hidden from outsiders. But it lets her in. This opens up a whole new world to her. A world with relatives of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Everyone here has a curse. This is a place where the weird fit in making them not so weird. If you are a misfit, you might some day find yourself in this town.
This narrator is one of the most amazing ones I’ve heard. He can do any voice, male or female, with any accent. Idk how he got so talented. I’d like to know his story. He gives each book an extra happy vibe through his tone. One of my all time favorite narrators.

Trouble With Witches
Let me start with saying I love Kristen Painter, and have many of her books. I have been a little disappointed in the last few books. I love the premise of this book, and enjoyed it well enough, though it dragged in places. I also think it read a bit like a harlequin book, a little to juvenile. I loved the different characters, and hoped there would be more of them... goblins, sprites and magical creatures. Not sure I'll be purchasing any additional books from her. I need a little more substance for my credits. As usual the narrator was AWESOME!

interesting world building.
I was here more for the urban fantasy and it was kind of just there. this was primarily romance and it felt shoehorned in. Main character is ready to marry this guy a day after meeting him? even more weird is him being gung ho about it as well a day later right after treating her like an unpleasant skin condition. people who love sappy wish fulfillment romance will love this. I was not one of those people and found it unbelievable and contrived. Perhaps I wouldn't have been so annoyed if it developed over time or the course of a few more books. the world has potential though.

Great Start to a New Series
We are brought into a new supernatural town of Shadowvale steeped in magic and mystery. Kristen Painter fans will not be disappointed in this new series it has the same easy listening fluffy tale but think it also adds a deeper look at the town and dynamics than the breezier Nocturne Falls. I really enjoyed different aspects of the magic in this town as well as the concept of curses which reminded me a little of that mechanic in the show Haven for those that have seen it. We are able to come into the town and dynamics through the eyes of the protagonist Emeranth Greer aka Em who is seeking shelter her essentially unknown family member who happens to be the central witch of the town. The romantic interest Deacon Evermore is the local law enforcement and is interesting and plays well against Em, there relationship is sweet and like the Nocturne Falls series and remains PG throughout. I appreciate that what I felt in this series that lacked for me in Nocturne Falls is a deeper look at the town, community, and situation that these characters are placed in. Where in Nocturne Falls the town and locations feel more like a prop that characters are using, Shadowvale really grabs my interest and I want to learn more about the place and it's inhabitants. I am excited to listen to the next stories in the series and would recommend to folks who enjoy Kristen's other series. Light romance with a little humor engaging town and happy ending assured.

Too Long for such a Predictable Story
i just finished "Sucks To Be Me", which was a welcome change in this author's stories. So I tried this book and found it to be like every other book ahe's ever written. - over-complicated, underplotted, with same old character types. I'm pretty sure she just calls up a computer menu that lets her rename the characters, change place names, and then she just hits "go" and gets her next book.

too simplistic. decent author, just no story
I enjoy the writing style of the author, but the romance was bland and boring, the "troubles" were too easily worked out, and there was really nothing of importance in the entire book.
I like the narrator, but not for anything sexy. he made any intimate scenes overly pg.

Good Storyline, Misleading Title
Really don’t feel the title fits this book. I feel the title should be something like “The Secrets of Shadowvale.” Shadowvale is a special town built upon magic. It never shows sunshine. And is a mystery in itself. This is a very enjoyable, clean & easy listening paranormal fantasy that keeps you eagerly wanting to learn more.
This is not just your average story about a niece going to visit her aunt in hoped to be allowed to live with her for awhile till she is able to go out and make it on her own. This is a great story and very different. When you think you can predict the next move, you find yourself wrong. Story is action filled with twists and turns.
This book is the first in its series and I highly recommend it.
