Summary

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes.

A do-over.

This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path.

Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries-old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a little while.

That is, until I learn what the house really is: something I never would've thought possible.

As my new life begins, a couple of things become immediately clear: Forty isn't too old for adventure. Not by half. It is too old to take crap from anyone, however, or care what people think.

I had no idea how incredibly freeing that could be. Or how dangerous this new life would become.

I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.

Let down by narrator

Honestly - if you happen across a word you're unfamiliar with, you could,,, I don't know... look it up ousing one of the many online prounication guides.that are available these days.

For example "draughts" is not pronouned "drorts" it's pronounced "draafts".

{sigh} You'd think someone involved in the recording process would point this sort of thing out to the narrator.... but apparently not.

The story's not bad, although the whole muscles-as-hard-as-rocks writing style is tediously overblown.

I Loved This Story - It Ticked Every Box!

I'm already a fan of K. F. Breene's books and her writing style. Her stories tick every box for me; intelligent writing style that's easy to read, main characters with depth of personality that I can connect to and believe in, depth of character in the supporting cast, believable background story and setting and a balanced mix of relationship, tension, action, humour and mystery. As a menopausal woman, I love that this series will have an older protagonist and supporting characters.

I've listened to audiobooks narrated by Nicole Poole before and loved her performance - Magical Midlife Madness was no exception. I loved the pace at which she read the book and how she poured in the relevant emotion for the different scenes. There is a strong core cast of characters in this story, Nicole's performance brought each of them to life, showcasing their personalities while giving them each suitably different voices when reading the dialogue.

Due to the graphic nature of some of the more violent scenes, I would recommend this book to adults who aren't offended by this sort of thing. But if you enjoy a sort of second coming-of-age for older, independent, capable heroines and strong alpha heroes, with a generous helping of banter, humour and realistic issues for the over 40s within a paranormal adventure, then this book may be your next favourite read. It's certainly left me wanting to read the next book - Magical Midlife Dating - and check out the other books available in the Paranormal Women's Fiction (PWF) genre.

Nice story, narration could be better

I like the energetic can-do of the heroine, story was good. However, the narrator has a tendency to rattle off her words like she needs to cram a quota in every minute, so the story suffers, becoming monotonous and unfeeling. Could do better.

Story is great, performance is great...mostly

I really like this story and the performer..... but please please please pronounce Niamh correctly. Every time it's mangled and it drags me out of the story.

And Niamh is mentioned a lot.

But for this....5 stars.

Absolutely hilarious

I absolutely loved this book. Brilliant writing and performance. You must listen to this to get the full benefit of the book. It’s hilarious. I was driving around laughing like a lunatic listening to it. Can’t wait for book two on audible. I’ve already pre-ordered it.

Loved it

Absolutely loved this book. Even sat down in the living room, tv off so I could find out how it ends. So lovely to have a book that focuses on us slightly older ladies that still want to live in the world of fantasy 🥰 Well done K F Breene, time to listen to your whole catalogue xx

Love the story

I like the story and the characters are well written however the narrator really needs to learn how to pronounce words she hasn't come across. Niamh is pronounced neeve not nayev and Niamh is one of the main characters so you hear that word a lot. There are other words too that the narrator should have been told how to pronounce before this was released. I do, however, plan to get the whole series as its nice to have an older woman who's relatively happy in her own skin as the main character for a change.

Fluffy fun

Loved the MC I'm also completely freaked out by dolls. Overall I enjoyed the book. It irritated me how the narrator pronounced Niamh and draughts wrong throughout and the an Irish accent almost as bad as the ones that made me stop watching Sons of Anarchy. Also how many times Jess let out breaths she didn't realise she'd been holding 🙄

Fun, Laughter and Friendships in a Crazy World!

Read the book, listen to the audio! You really cannot afford not to explore this world that K F Breene has created. Jess and the gang must be my all time favourite set of characters and Nicole Poole does an absolutely amazing job of bringing them all to life! 5 stars and one of my favourite books/author of all time!
