Summary

Life as Aileen knew it ended when she woke up in a morgue sporting a new set of fangs after a wild night out. Now, as a courier for the supernatural world, she balances figuring out this whole vampire thing with making enough to support her ice cream habit.

When a job goes disastrously awry and ends with a body on the ground, Aileen finds herself in over her head as she draws the attention of a powerful creature intent on her death.

Aileen will need to separate her allies from her enemies before it's too late. To survive, she'll work with a being she swore to avoid at all costs - a powerful vampire who may hold the key to her survival. Or the flame from which her world burns.

UF vampire first in series

The narrating took me a while to get into but after a few chapters I was intrigued where the story was going.
Aileen is ex army and quite a tough MC but I couldn't grasp her almost lack of intelligence about the supernatural world she found herself navigating in. Working as a supernatural courier should mean that she picks up more Intel but this doesn't seem to be the case and she lands herself in a sticky situation.

Overall, I would recommend and I am intrigued as to what will happen in this new series.

Good but missing something

Really enjoyed the story but the narration could do with a little more definition between the voices but otherwise read well

Loved it!

I listened to this book for free as part of my Audible subscription and thoroughly enjoyed it so bought the next book, and then the next book… I’m now on book four and happily walk the dogs longer than usual just to listen to it on my walks away from the kids. I can’t get enough of Aileen. I love the developing relationship between her and Liam and how slow burn it is. I love how she navigates the vampire world while managing to keep them on their toes and I really love strong female characters in a male dominated world - it’s difficult to maintain the strength whilst also being vulnerable and accepting help but this author does it brilliantly. I am so glad that I stumbled onto this series - it’s my new obsession. Thank you for the enjoyment this has brought me.

Entertaining listen

I love the genre but sadly I'm often disappointed. I liked this one however. The story gives its own spin on some of the supernatural world but it's still has just the right amount of klassik elements for my taste. The story was good, a lot of twists nad turns but not so it became to complex and hard to follow. One point of criticism is the narrator's nasal voice, it really took away some of the charm from the main character. It made her sound winey and that doesn't suit her.

Shadows messenger

I liked Aileen I think she has a great sardonic sense of humour and an inquisitive outlook . I like the way she is bungling through her infancy of vampirism and look forward to the next adventure

Amazing story and very good orator

I love how the author capture me with Aileen’s story within the first chapter, and keep me captivated for the whole book. Love the inner monolough and thoughts of Aileen and I love her stubborness. The orator does an amazing job with each character and the hours goes by too fast! I normally dont write a review, but I totally disagree with the negative reviews. I loved it! I love that Aileen doesnt know much about the supernatural world, because then we as listeners gets to know her world through her first hand experiances.

Couldn’t cope with narrator’s voice.

Story seems fine but I just couldn’t get past the annoying tone of the narrator’s voice. I had to return the book because it was just awful :(

This was hard

Main character is very very whiny, sarcastic, up speaking a lot. She’s a young woman not a teenager and an ex soldier so this characterisation seems radically off. Story inconsistencies and the pacing is all over the place. Predictable and generics Sorry, even for a freebie this was hard, I only listened to the end as I was on a train with no signal!

Dreary to listening experience

The narrator voice was very dreary with not much change throughout the book. The plot was ok but was put off by the lack of emotion and dragging tone .
