Summary

An action-packed bookish adventure, The Lost Plot is the fourth title in Genevieve Cogman's witty and wonderful The Invisible Library series.

A covert mission.

A royal demand.

And a race against time.

In a 1920s-esque America, Prohibition is in force, fedoras, flapper dresses and tommy guns are in fashion, and intrigue is afoot. Intrepid Librarians Irene and Kai find themselves caught in the middle of a dragon vs dragon contest. It seems a young librarian has become tangled in this conflict, and if they can't extricate him there could be serious political repercussions for the mysterious Library. And, as the balance of power across mighty factions hangs in the balance, this could even trigger war.

Irene and Kai find themselves trapped in a race against time (and dragons) to procure a rare book. They'll face gangsters, blackmail and fiendish security systems. And if this doesn't end well, it could have dire consequences for Irene's job. And, incidentally, for her life . . .

Continue the literary magic with The Mortal Word. Genevieve is also the author of the Sunday Times bestselling Scarlet - which reimagines the tale of the Scarlet Pimpernel, but with vampires, mages and magic. . .

Another good sequel

Before I go on, I have no idea what the other reviewer is talking about saying it’s a different narrator - it’s not, it’s same narrator as always.

Audible doesn’t give good blurbs, so let me try to give one here - the queen of a dragon court has issued a challenge to two of her courtiers vying for an open position, these subordinate dragons seek to undermine the neutrality of the Library by gaining the aid of Librarians in their challenges. Our heroine, Irene, finds herself at the centre of this, in new world (to her), trying to steer a path to keep both the Library’s reputation safe and her dragon apprentice Kai out of the political fall out, while dealing with a prohibition era New York that thinks she’s a London crime boss.

It’s not as fraught as the last one, but perhaps it’s all the better for that, and Irene needs to rely very heavily on her improvisation skills here, dodging dragons, crime bosses and the law, while getting Kai to show some initiative himself.

What an extraordinary pleasure and narrator

I loved this story. It managed to be plausible whilst being completely bonkers. You need to have read the two other stories first though.
The narration was brilliant, subtle and totally engaging. I was so drawn to kristin’s style. I’ll listen to anything she is involved in.
I am so glad there are more. I highly recommend the series so far. Well done!!!!!

Superb!

Excellent performance from Kristen Atherton and one of the best so far from Genevieve Cogman. I love this series, so well written with well defined characters and gripping storylines.
Surprised Netflix haven’t picked it up yet.

Another enjoyable Romp in another alternate world.

I am enjoying this series very much. This time it seems that The Library's neutrality is at risk. It seems that a librarian is working for some dragons to find a book. Of course there is much more to this than at first appears and as Irene and Kai travel to a 1920s style world to discover the truth of what is happening they are faced with more than death threats and can not know what the consequences this story will have on them.
These books are not brilliant, sometimes they are a bit clunky, sometimes a bit samey, and sometimes there are inconsistencies. But they are fun and the excellent narration brings the characters to life.
I don't think this is the best book to start with, I would recommend reading the series in order. It is worth it.

I love this series completely!

I love everything about this series! The story is clever and interesting, sometimes funny and heartfelt. I enjoyed the language (small ‘l’) very much with its balance of easy flowing and delicious taste-bombs of ‘ohh, good word’! And then there’s the narration - Kristen Atherton is top-most top-class! She’s now my benchmark on which I judge all other narrators. I have since listened a everything on Audible that she’s narrated. More please!
Overall, a great great listen.

Excellent experience 👏

Nothing to dislike. The story was full of intrigue and excitement with slight mirth and a touch of romance.
