Summary

This boxed set contains three books in the USA Today best-selling Glass and Steele series:

  • The Watchmaker's Daughter.
  • The Mapmaker's Apprentice.
  • The Apothecary's Poison.

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who’ll accept her–an enigmatic and mysterious man from America. A man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he’s ill.

Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won’t tell India why any old one won’t do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London’s best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she’s certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she’ll find herself unemployed and homeless again–and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life.

With a cast of quirky characters, an intriguing mystery, and a dash of romance, this thrilling historical fantasy series will keep you listening late into the night.

Enjoyable characters

I've really enjoyed the Glass Library series and was delighted to learn of this Glass and Steel series, which comes first chronologically, it turns out. Excellent characters and I've enjoyed the original blending of history and magic in the story. The magic fits in surprisingly well and manages to be thought provoking and plausible. I am looking forward to the next book.

Really enjoyed this collection

Bought on a whim, but quickly became addicted to the odd mix of characters. The story line was original and I found myself needing to solve the mysteries.

Good narration and story.

Overall the narration is well done, with one or two minor instances where it was difficult following a change of character speaking. The story is also well written, with an interesting twist on the use of magic, but does not have quite the depth of other authors (eg Ben Aaronovitch, Jodi Taylor). There is a continuing on, off romantic twist which does not really add anything to the story, but is not too distracting. The ongoing mystery of finding an unknown clockwork magician is interwoven through other mysteries occurring in each book, allowing the author to guide you through the solving of those whilst keeping your interest in how the ongoing one will develop.
Well worth reading although, after three books in the box set, a break is needed before moving on to book four.

Bland

It did not hold my interest. It came as a boxed set. With a sense of relief, I stopped listening midway through the third book. Phew. The narrator was very good.
