TRIGGER WARNING

Summary
The Lord of Stariel is dead. Long live the Lord of Stariel. Whoever that is.
Everyone knows who the magical estate will choose for its next ruler. Or do they? Will it be the lord’s eldest son, who he despised? His favourite nephew, with the strongest magical land-sense? His scandalous daughter, who ran away from home years ago to study illusion?
Hetta knows it won’t be her, and she’s glad of it. Returning home for her father’s funeral, all Hetta has to do is survive the family drama and avoid entanglements with irritatingly attractive local men until the Choosing. Then she can leave. But whoever Stariel chooses will have bigger problems than eccentric relatives to deal with.
Winged, beautifully deadly problems.
For the first time in centuries, the fae are returning to the Mortal Realm, and only the Lord of Stariel can keep the estate safe. In theory.
The Lord of Stariel is the first book in the Stariel quartet.

Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this easy listening story. I liked that didn't have weak and insipid female characters and the action scenes weren't all fantastical. would listen to.more in the series. Got this from the free audible books section but it is a pleasant introduction to books I might like.

Nothing happens and Hetta is boring
The premise with the sentient land and magic is so promising but it's just the pretext for a love triangle. This wouldn't be a problem but all we do is we're stuck in Hetta's head with the plot being that they wash dishes, and she had some wine, and they make lame jokes at each other's expense. Wow much love story. I don't need to vicariously experience doing dishes, I could do my own dishes if I'd like that kind of thing.

Unexpected and delightful
The prologue of this book had me so confused… It seems so incongruous with the blurb about the story. That is the perfect antidote for how this book goes. It’s a lovely novel about a multi faceted family and an estate with rich heritage and BOOM fey invasion! Absolutely LOVE the characters and FANTASTIC narration

not a dumb heroine
I adored this book, this is probably the first time I was not yelling at the heroine for making dumb choices just to further a plot along. Hetta is brilliant and logical and does not keep silly secrets to herself when the problem would be resolved just by telling someone. I was so invested in her mundane journey that I'd forgotten about the fae until they they turned up and was even more in love with the plot that we didn't just forget about mundane problems to deal with magical ones. a beautiful balance between magical and mundane with all problems equally given attention. I've already bought books 2-4 and cannot wait to listen to them. I will say I did guess quite a few plot points but was also surprised by some of the bigger ones. I was right along with Hetta as she figured things out.

A slow start…
The positives to this book are that it is an intellectually sound story telling. I was not beating my head against the wall yelling at an MC for being idiotic, illogical, or repetitive. However, I was expecting it to be more about the Fae and magical world-building. It wasn’t. It was more about the MC’s family and their relationships.
Regardless of the aforementioned and a slow start, I’m going to listen to the next book because even though it’s ant-climatic the characters are endearing and the book is well written.

Downton Abbey meets the fantasy realm…
… and I’m here for it! This book was a delightful surprise. It was an included title in my membership so I thought I would give it a try, and I just outright loved it. The character descriptions of fae leave nothing to the imagination, I love the narrator’s voice, and it was easy to be immersed in the story and care about the characters. I enjoyed this book so much I upgraded my membership to use a credit towards book 2. Well played Audible, well played.
