Summary
The quest of the Seven Swords has put terrible power in the hands of madmen - and unleashed catastrophic war.
Ridmark Arban is the Shield Knight, the only Swordbearer in the realm of Owyllain. He is allied with the noble King Hektor Pendragon, who fights to reunify the Seven Swords and to end the destructive war they have unleashed.
But the tyrannical King Justin Cyros is marching to war against Hektor, and King Justin knows the secret of the malevolent New God, a secret that will kill everyone in Owyllain.

surprised I've never heard of these books, so good
really enjoyable and really worth a listen. Great story and narrator. definitely a must for fantasy fans

A mix bag for me on quality.
Firstly, I liked the characters. They are well-rounded, and I'd expect that as he has been writing about some of them for quite a while. Certainly they all have distinct personalities and are three dimensional. Good books for me have to start with strong characters and the characters were good enough to keep me reading.
The average parts next. The magic system is very bland and simplistic. This leads to some very repetitive spell casting options and after two books I do find it getting a little dull. Sadly the same can be said of the sword play. It's very slash this, stab that without being very descriptive.
Lastly the plot. This is a mix of good a bad. Taken as a whole it's a good plot and I would have enjoyed the story more, but for one problem with it. The author writes a very transparent plot that the reader will be MILES ahead of the characters with the same information. This annoys me when I'm thinking the characters are half-witted by the glaringly obvious things they should notice.
There is also a spirit that gives warnings in dreams to some of the characters and I hated it when she said they were not in the right time to hear it. It made NO sense. If someone can see the future they can tell me, and I'll believe it or I won't, and I don't have to be at that time to know it. More so as she still gives warnings they do remember that will happen soon. The last one is the worst though as she gives the most important warning about the last battle in the book to the person that can't remember it when others would do. This is annoying as she gives 99% of them to the character that remembers every detail when he wakes and is done solely so the author can have his last battle.
