Summary

How far would you go for happily ever after?

From the number one Sunday Times best-selling author of the Caraval series, the first book in a new series about love, curses and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after.

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in happily-ever-after. Until she learns that the love of her life is about to marry another and her dreams are shattered.

Desperate to stop the wedding and heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline's first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game - and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy....

Anticlimactic

This story started off promising, but after the first few chapters, it became boring. the protagonist is so fixated on falling in love that there isn't really much else to her (minus the prophecy). Her thoughts are stale and repetitive which makes the story also feel that way. The time wasted on repeatedly describing her feelings should have been used to inject more action/tension into the story. I don't think I'll finish this. Jax had so much more potential that'll he has been afforded.

MC is a little frustrating but there's growth.

A lot of twists that maybe distract from the main story plot. Solid book overall.

More magnificent than I could have hoped for. And if I ever have a bad word to say about Rebecca Soler's voice acting, know that I've been body snatched. She always delivers *chef's kiss*

It wasn't what I expected

I was a little disappointed in this after listening to the Caraval trilogy, which I loved so much. The thing I enjoyed about Caraval was that the romance side of the story wasn't the main focal point, it made for a really exciting adventure full of magic and mystery. OUaBH was all romance, and although it was set in the same world with a few of the same characters, it just didn't feel as gripping. In places the dialogue and actions of some of the characters felt forced, which made characters less believable. The prophecy, Evangeline's father's shops, and the mystery surrounding her birth were the interesting parts of the story, but the constant obsession over falling in love was a bit dull and unfortunately that took up most of the book.

I liked the narrator and the references and links to the Caraval series, the world Garber has created in these books is wonderful and magical. Another aspect I liked is Garber's writing style, which is reminiscent of her previous books. I just prefer stories where romance is more of a sub genre than the main focus. I will also say that this is a YA book and I'm not the target audience, I do feel this would probably appeal to a younger reader looking for a romance novel in a magical/fantasy style.

Sensational

The only problem is waiting for book 2!! What a story. It was easy to dive into and stick with throughout, lots of twists and turns. Beautiful narration, fantastic storyline and brilliant character development.
