Summary

The Elizabethan house of Bracketts is about to be turned into a museum. It had once been the home of the celebrated poet Esmund Chadleigh and is to become a shrine to his life and poetry - but the transition is far from smooth. Carole Seddon had been reluctant to join the Bracketts Board, and now she realises that she should have listened to her instinct. The simmering tension between the board members is about to boil over. A human skeleton is discovered in the kitchen garden, and before too long there is a second body, not yet cold. Murder is no longer just a dreadful possibility but a certainty.

One of the best murder mysteries

Possibly my favourite of the first five books. I like how the main characters develop as well as their relationship and friendship. The story is very well researched and such a good mystery! Simon Brett again amazed me with his gift for describing different characters and insight into human nature, and he is a wonderful narrator. On to the next in the series for me!

Interesting

A bit slow to start and lacking in excitement. I prefer the stories that centre on the relationship between Jude and Carol which this book didn't really. However, the story picked up as the book progressed and the ending was both intriguing and satisfactory.

Cosy murder mystery

I stumbled on these as I love the Charles Paris mysteries. It's great that they are a series and perfect as audio stories before bedtime or on a rainy afternoon. I particularly like that the characters are middle aged women and more rounded characters than the usual stereotypes. The stories are complete in themselves but added interest comes from additional revelations about the main protagonists' histories. Simon Brett conveys the characters so well in his reading.

Love this series

These characters are interesting and annoying at the same time, I frequently want to slap Carol, but she reminds me of so many people I’ve known.
Easy listening, glad there’s more to ‘read’

Getting annoyed now

Very disappointed and will not read more. Great narration and I love his Charles Parris series, but this is awful!
I have read the first four books now and Carol seems like a very rigid and uptight woman whom anyone with any sense would avoid like the plague .
Jude seems like a patronising new age snob, whose mission in life is to " kindly" teach others the error of their ways, whilst blithely ignoring her own.
This wouldn't be so bad if they developed as their friendship grew but they dont. We don't even know Jude's last name let alone anything about her after four books which is unbelievable , especially as Carol's character would have dropped her ages ago in real life, inspite of her warm brown eyes. Lovely bit of satire on the upwardly mobile middle class in the countryside .
In fact it was only this that kept me going as the protagonists were dreadful.
M C Beaton did it so much better with Agatha Raisin.

Ok

Not brilliant but a reasonable holiday listen. Looking for something a bit more taxing now,

Great book series

It's funny during the first books I was trying to work out when the books were set. Mobile phones are mentioned and computers, but the have dial up. I had to Google when broadband was commercially available, early 2000s by 2007 it was throughout the UK. This book was set during about 2003 I think. I was 24. Wow, I feel old. This book was fantastic and a bit sad, my heart went out to Jude. We really need to know more about her, I am getting so frustrated with not knowing anything about this woman, it would be very upsetting for Carol not knowing, I do actually find Jude a bit rude. My friends know everything about me, I have to stay friends with them out of necessity, they know to much! The story was really interesting Simon Brett's writing and performance are wonderful. His American accent is not great, I did laugh, but fair play to him he gives it his all and it sounds like he's enjoying himself.

Dark themes but entertaining!

I enjoyed this a lot more on second listening, as I was prepared for its sadness & poignancy. So expect a bit more emotion & tragedy than the first two Fethering Mysteries! Although I do find it somewhat implausible just how chilled & sanguine Jude is in every situation...probably because I am more of an uptight Carole type!
