Summary

Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont, police force has a serious problem: in a community where a decade could pass without a single murder, the body count is suddenly mounting. Innocent citizens are being killed - and others set up - seemingly orchestrated by a mysterious ski-masked man.

Signs suggest that a three-year-old murder trial might lie at the heart of things, but it's a case that many in the department would prefer remained closed. A man of quiet integrity, Lt. Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

Surprisingly good

I wasn't sure what to expect with this being the first outing for this author or character. I was pleasantly surprised and found it difficult to put down.

A 1980's American cop mystery!

Found in the Plus Catalogue, this small town police department murder investigation is a pleasingly enough listen. The stories well detailed, is a reminder of a time before everything was computerised, mobile phones were the norm; only the conclusion seems rushed, with some issues not fully developed [the father, daughter relationship for one].
As Archer Mayor's debut novel Open Season, is a fair start to what looks like a long series featuring his amicable lead character, Lt Joe Gunther.
The narration by Tom Taylorson was great, with fine character definition, which made for easy listening.

Satisfying listen

Satisfying listen, however I always wonder why so many writers insist on making the police such serial incompetents.

Relaxed

At times the narration was too soothing and I found myself waking up 4 chapters further than I remembered hearing, but that is down to the soothing voice of the narrator and not the content of the story itself as I always had to go back to make sure I heard the full story which means it kept me interested. A nice change for the hero not to be the perfect cop and to show uncertainty at times and this made me like him as a character. Interested to listen to the next one to see what else is revealed about Gunther.

Great character

If you like police action dramas then this one is for you. This is one of those stories that just keeps going so you can't stop listening. Good characters and gripping to the end. Well told and can't wait for book 2.

Marvellous small town thriller

I stumbled over this and gave it a go. It's great. A small town thriller that's gritty, dark, exciting. Wonderful characters who are full of flaws and grit. The narrator is top class.

Beautifully descriptive

Tom Taylorson captures my image of the character of Joe Gunther completely, he brings to life the vivid images of a state I've never visited and people who survive the cold and harshness that surrounds them. Archer Mayor's storylines are always different exciting and unexpected. real and dramatic. I'm hooked
