Summary

Once upon a time, there was a guy who got so fed up with life that he resorted to murder and mayhem just to feel alive.

Lorenzo Gambini is bored. So f--king bored. Most people either annoy him or avoid him, afraid to face him. Figuratively. Literally. With his face partially disfigured, scarred, he looks every bit the monster the stories make him out to be: the notorious Scar. They say he's a sociopath. Maybe he's a psychopath. Whatever path he's on, people tend to stay far away from it.

Until one day, a young woman bumps right into him - a woman just as fed up with life, but for much different reasons. With a scarlet letter inked on her wrist and secrets buried deep in her soul, Morgan Myers is running from something...or maybe somebody. Lorenzo isn't quite sure. You can bet your ass he's going to figure it out, though.

Contains mature themes.

WHY MUST ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END?!!Hands down my favourite series of books

If you’re somehow still reading reviews, debating whether it’s worth the read/ listen, JUST DO IT ALREADY I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT REGRET!!!

Lorenzo and Morgan are just the perfect characters and I freaking LOVED their dynamic, it was so powerful and felt a lot more realistic than most books (where I just end up rolling my eyes over how predictable and cliché! Ugh!)

Morgan isn’t the typical whiny, unfortunate, “virgin” pathetic little sop that most authors love to write, she’s quick, witty, fierce, feisty and a force of nature, and you truly invest in her success.
Whilst Lorenzo is just hilariously and utterly unhinged, the ultimate “bad boy” but make it “menacing man”, he just effortlessly radiates that powerful dangerous man vibe, and you kinda fall in love with his crazy, even encouraging him to be more crazy…plus I definitely cracked a few major LOLS at his dark humorous quips of his inner monologue!…it’s just so perfect!!!!!

Plus the narrator’s just freaking nailed their performances of the characters! I died and went to heaven with these books. Honestly, i was completely enthralled and consumed, I couldn’t stop, I just wanted more and more, chapter after chapter!
It’s like the author just delved into my mind and scratched all the right spots of the most thrilling fantasy, and then brought it to life!

I was so gutted when I finished this whole series, and it left me searching for another mafia/romance book that hits the same way this one did, but sadly I’ve still not found one that even comes half as close to this :(

…I wish I could listen to it for the first time all over again!!!

PLEASE MORE LIKE THIS I BEG, I BEG!!

Different, but kept me listening.

Not a book I would normally pick, but I found the plot intriguing, would possibly listen to more by this author.

Wow! A Dark Rollercoaster

This is the first time I have tried this author and it definitely won't be the last.

I wasn't sure what I would find and it started off being quite a bit too dark for me and I wasn't sure whether I could handle it.

What made me continue was Lorenzo's sense of humor (although he is known as this terrifying psycho) and the fact that he does have an albeit weird moral compass.

Of all the people in New York, Morgan decides to pick Lorenzo's pocket and he is just gobsmacked; and so commences their interesting relationship.

Morgan has had a terrifying existence with the Russian mafia and she is basically on the run from a man obsessed with her and Lorenzo turns out to be, in his own strange way, her knight in shining armour even though he runs the New York underworld .

The narration is superb and if you can get through the disturbing way that she is treated, how she manages to survive by hook line and sinker, this is an incredible duet and I highly recommend it.

It is definitely not for the faint hearted or for anyone with ANY triggers as there are many, but what a ride!

Riveting, funny, heart breaking.. a must read!

This story is witty, gripping and had me smiling throughout. Morgan (Scarlett) is our troubled heroine, with a troubled past and a gritty future where she struggles to get by day by day, surviving the nights and chasing the sunrise always hopeful for a better day. She is running from her demon who is determined to catch her. Lorenzo (Scar) our unwitting hero, an equally troubled past of different sort, a criminal brutal, cold hearted murderer who enjoys what he does and cares for few. The two meet in an unconventional way, Lorenzo is drawn to her and even when he has no reason to keep her in his life, he does. Morgan is guarded throughout this book and discloses little to us or Lorenzo about why she's running or who she's running from until near the end of the book. The chemistry between them is explosive yet realistic. The story is well crafted and their banter is lively and sharp witted. I will be reading the next instalment straight away.

A MAFIA FEEL ROMANCE. IT WAS EXCITING

Well, that was exciting, I loved this book, the characters and the anticipation of what was going to happen next all the way through.

Menace had that mafia feel to it although Lorenzo Gambini or Scar as he is called is not a mafia boss, he's not exactly a guy who's on the straight and narrow either, he has his men at the click of his fingertips and Lorenzo is a man other men fear.
Lorenzo is the man with a scar, a crook, a villain but also a loving brother, Lorenzo is a man of layers who firmly keeps the mask on and hides behind the scar.

Morgan or Scarlet as Lorenzo starts to call her due to a letter S on her wrist is a woman with backbone, she's is on the run and works in a club, Morgan is also a woman with many layers, she's strong and resilient, I liked Morgan's character.

Morgan and Lorenzo first meet in a bar and she pickpockets him, he finds her and if it were any other person they would be dead but something about Morgan draws him to her, he is curious and her fiery character he finds refreshing. Morgan stands with her head high were other men would cower, Morgan is different and shows no fear.

The two are thrust together again when Morgan's past comes to find her and Lorenzo takes her under his wing.

Menace is a great story it's exciting, I loved Lorenzo he can be funny without meaning to be and he's so smooth.

I loved how Lorenzo addresses the reader, listening to this on audio it really brought the book to life, even more, when you have a character that also talks to the reader even though it may have been Lorenzo saying something like "I'm not sure what you're laughing at either". Its not much but I loved how JM Darhower has done that.

Menace is a two-part book and like all two-part story's you are just getting all the answers to your questions, things are just getting even more interesting and then it's finished.

Menace is hot with some sizzling scenes, filled with suspense and interesting characters, it has the element of dark and a mafia feel. It was great I loved it.

I am definitely reading book 2 I can't wait to jump into that one, I have it on my kindle unlimited and then I downloaded the audio for £2.99, Bargain.

Buyer be Ware, It's a Cliffhanger

Ok, so I'll start off with explaining my review process. A 5 star book must contain the following nine areas: Lots of laughs/heart wrentching or both , hot steamy sex, relatable/believable (I don't care if it's about vampires or mythical creatures, as long as the rest of the story is convincing), excellent narration, detailed but not excessively, keeps your attention and finally, worth listening to more than once. This book was not the best I've ever listened to but not the worst either....was OK. It contained 5 out of the 9. I will however say the suspense was great (and I hate suspenses, I'm the person who reads the last chapter of a book if the suspense is too much of a wait), and the plot was completely unpredictable. It's not your average story but enjoyable. Lastly, I hate cliffhangers with a passion, because I simply cannot wait to know what will happen next, and in many cases, it leaves me pissed off for days; but this one didn't leave me angry at all, I could live a few months or years for the next book. Which translates to being just an OK book.

Dark and less than perfect

Lorenzo and Morgan are such an interesting pair. Lorenzo is a cold hearted killer and crime boss. Morgan is a stripper with a sad secret. One thing I liked about this story is that it's not hearts and flowers. For one, the hero has a terrifying scar on his face, making him blind in one eye. The heroine picks pockets and often finds herself at the mercy of very predatory men. There is also an interesting but tragic twist in her backstory (no spoilers). While Lorenzo and Morgan do end up together, I would argue that they have more of a FWB situation than a romantic relationship. Their banter was funny despite the dark tone of the story. Just a heads up, this ends on a cliffhanger.

I liked Iggy Toma. He really understood the characters and the story.

Another great story!

I haven’t read a J. M. Darhower book that I haven’t enjoyed and this one is no exception. The author created another world that is definitely unputdownable.

Amazing!

This was probably one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. Well written, superbly narrated, I wished it was even longer. I’m glad there’s a sequel, which I’ve immediately purchased.

I won’t give away plot details, except to say that this isn’t your normal girl-next-door falls for sweet/hot/misunderstood alpha male. These are two broken people living hard, tumultuous lives. They aren’t perfect or even very nice in many cases. But this makes the story 10x better, and way more fascinating.

Narration was excellent. First time I’ve listened to either, and I’ll be frantically looking for more. Iggy sounded like the Joker to me in some instances, and it worked lol. She did a great job with Morgan, and her kid voices were spot on.

Don’t hesitate, get this book.

Hands down best audiobook I’ve ever listened to

Iggy Toma absolutely owned this narration. OWNED it. I was absolutely blown away by his performance. It was so real and natural, hilarious, dry, psychotic and downright GLORIOUS. I never wanted this duet to end and I’ll never recover from this book hangover. I HIGHLY recommend this audiobook.

Average 🧡

Story is not too bad, sometimes corny, mean main man, fairly believable relationship. I'm not going onto the second book though.
Female narrators lengthy pauses for every full stop and comma drove me crazy at times however she is talented at voices was crisp and clear. Male narrator very good.

As good in audio as it was in print!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: 😌😎🙃😮🤐

The heroine: Morgan (a.k.a. Scarlett) - She is a thief and a stripper and though she prostitutes herself to a cop who she wants help from, she is adamant that she is not a prostitute. She has an ‘S’ tattooed on her wrist which everyone wonders about and has some dark secrets. There are flashbacks of man from her childhood, known only as the tin man.

The Hero(es): Lorenzo Gambini (a.k.a. Scar) - Originally from Florida, he is the new mob boss in NYC and he took over the city pretty quickly in a bloody way by killing all the mob bosses in one fell swoop. Lorenzo is a sociopath and isn’t bothered with feelings or morals, there is only one person in the world he might love and that is his younger brother, who is intellectual and too soft for the life Lorenzo leads so he tries to make as normal of a home life as he can for his brother, while being in the mafia. He often doesn’t succeed in that.

The Story: Lorenzo is brutal and callous and utterly hilarious. One of my all time favorite Heroes. He has a long scar crossing his face and is blind in one eye from an injury given to him by his stepfather. When Morgan pickpockets him and steals his money, he is determined to find her and get back at her. He finds her and threatens her and is surprised when she fights back with all she can.

“They’re all wearing black, I realize, as I glance around the packed living room, except for Lorenzo, who dresses more like some hoodlum/model hybrid. It’s weird, right?”

I love Lorenzo. He is wisecracking, sarcastic and has no patience for other people. He is an insomniac, and a bit paranoid, but he has no fear and is so likable. You can’t help but love him. He was introduced in Target on our Backs the third book of the Monsters in his Eyes series, and he was awesome in that one.

I enjoyed the fact that Lorenzo sees past what Morgan does for a living and values her for the person she is. He sees that she has been through things in her life that led her to where she is and helps her to turn her life around (well as much around as working for the mob is).

The book was told in dual points of view with dual narration. Narrated by Kasha Kensington and Iggy Toma who both do a great job and have pleasant voices that are easy to listen to. I like duet narration better, where the male does all the male voices and female does all the female voices, but dual narration (alternating chapters) is fine.

Loved this!!!!

I knew I was going to regret starting this without having the second book 😖 I need it!! Mafia, bratva, sex trafficking, and the ballsy men who give 0 f*cks to anyone. My fave POV is Lorenzo's for all the pop culture references 😋 He and Morgan are freakin H🔥T together!!!!! 🥵💦❤️
