Summary

Complete Space Opera Series boxed set.

A young explorer finds an alien space pod in the frozen tundra, which leads to an interplanetary chase and space battle.

Plenty of action, epic original worldbuilding, and enjoyable moments with colorful characters. This series has all the right elements for a terrific alien contact space opera. And the ending is both surprising and satisfying!

This boxed set contains all three books in the Lost Colony Uprising series:

Book 1: Starship Relic

Ancient technology. Secret histories. And squids. In space.

Max is completing a survey in the barren, frozen north of planet Grailliyn, when he makes a startling discovery. There's a high-tech pod buried beneath the ice, and inside the pod is a young woman. She speaks his language, but with a strange accent.

The two are barely past awkward introductions when they are attacked. Max and his new friend are forced to flee. The worst part? They don't even know who is trying to kill them, or why.

Now, with assassins on their tail, the duo must find a way off the planet without blowing their cover. And then, if they can do that without getting eaten by space monsters, they might just find out the truth about their world.

Starship Relic is book one of the Lost Colony Uprising Trilogy, a sci-fi space opera adventure with spaceships, alien contact, deep conspiracies, wise-cracking characters, and lots of pew-pew (space battle action).

Book 2: Starship Invasion

Alien threats. Planetary invasion. And space squids.

When Snow was a young girl, she was cautioned against pressing big red buttons of any kind. As a responsible crew member of Starship Longissima, Snow took this warning to heart.

Then she forgot that promise, along with everything about her former life. When she was found by Max, asleep in the ice, neither of them had any idea what destructive events were about to be set in motion.

Now the red buttons (big ones) have been pressed, and there will be tragic consequences.

The planet of Grailliyn is suffering an invasion on a global scale.

With limited resources at hand, Snow and her new allies must find a way to stop the annihilation, or, failing that, evacuate as many of their people as possible before abandoning the planet of Grailliyn to the enemy, forever.

Book 3: Starship Overlords

Ancient alien technology. Unlikely allies. And a chance to strike back.

The twin planets of Grailliyn and Mega are once again under threat.

A new menace has arrived. A fleet of alien warships.

While the Earthlings continue to evacuate Grailliyn, Commander Carrack must call for help, enlisting potential new allies.

Meanwhile, Max, Snow, and the crew of the Dee-Dub continue searching for Alien technology. Their mission turns up an ancient secret that could change everything.

At last, the Earthlings may have a chance to strike back against the evil Overlords that threaten the entire galaxy.

Starship Overlords is book three of the Lost Colony Uprising Trilogy, a sci-fi space opera adventure with spaceships, alien contact, deep conspiracies, wise-cracking characters, and lots of pew-pew (space battle action).

Content rating: All ages, teen and up. Minimal language.

Out of this world

Oh wow. With this book you get three great adventures in one excellent book. This book is very different to the normal genre (murder mysteries) I read or listen to but I fancied a change and gave this book a try. The cast of characters was fun and like able, I especially loved Dozer the pet crab that went every where with them. Expect lots of strange monsters and life and death situations for the hero's to get out of.
Starship Relic
In order for Max to become a man, like everybody in the world that has come before him, Max must first complete a survey. Instead of choosing a simple trip to warmer climates like his friends he chooses to recreate the journey that took his parents lives, with one exception he will complete it for them. All he has is his mother's journal to follow, camping gear and cold weather gear and his loyal team of crabs to pull the sleigh across the ice, other than that it is just him and the cold wilderness. That is until he comes across a strange object half buried in the ice and he would have missed that if it was for the flashing bright lights. After days of struggling to free form the hard packed ice someone comes out of no where and starts shooting at him. Taking the pod with him he embarks on an adventure he never thought possible and one that will take him over rough seas and even into outer space. All the while being hunted by a ruthless killer determined to kill him at any cost. The reason is the pod Max found wasn't empty and the girl that wakes up from a very deep slumber could contain lots of unanswered questions. Questions like what really happened to Max's parents? If only she could remember. Is her waking up from a deep sleep just luck or will it have a fairly tell ending.
Starship Invasion
This story jumps around as multiple characters give there perspective of what is happening before joining together. Snow , Max and Dozzer are missing from most of this part of the story as all the action takes place on Grailliyn and you are introduced to a new set of characters and aliens. I enjoyed this part the most and was continuously wondering who was going to make it and how they would get out of the trouble they were in. Then the story moves to outer space and even though I did enjoy it I found this part a little bit more confusing, lots of different names for things but still action packed. I loved the computer and the author giving her an attitude is highly amusing.
The planet of Grailliyn is suffering an invasion on a global scale, with thousands for people dying from the killer squid like creatures that are falling from the sky. Who will survive? And how can they fight back? Snow, Max and Dozzer are doing there part to help from space, by waking up everybody in the space pods. In order to build spaceships to transport people to other planets they need everybody's help but with limited resource and space madness that is inflicting the crew they will have there work cut out for them. With the annihilation of Grailliyan imminent it is a case of how many people can be saved and not how to save the planet Max once called home.
Starship Overlords
I found book two and three to be very different from the first part of this book, with most of the action taking place in space with aliens, were as the first book was on Grailliyn and the battles took place with its native creatures. They are just as good but more imagination is needed for the space exploits. This part of the story is also told by multiple characters but with so much action you will enjoy just as much.
Time is running out for Grailliyn as the evil Overlords alien invasion draws ever closer and this time they are not just sending giant squid like creatures. While some try to gain support from other planets, others try to evacuate the inhabitants of the planet and others still try to find factories or material to build ships but it is up to Max, Snow and there small group of hero's to end it once and for all by taking down the Overlord.
I like the narrator, especially his use of sound effects it really helped give the story another dimension and takes you out of this world.

Complete Sci Fi Adventure Romp

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange or an honest review.

This is a complete science fiction trilogy that starts with a man searching for the secret that led to his parents death but discovers a woman in a capsule from much removed a world and time and sends you on a journey as the mysteries behind the woman and the world into a space faring quest to confront the powers that rule the universe.

Is it a little tropey? Absolutely! However it never feels old. Paulin creates worlds and characters that fascinate and delight. From invading alien squids, to helpful AI and most importantly the cutest hairy crab creature I've ever read about. The human characters are likeable as well. The first book focuses mostly on 2-3 main characters and the second and third books expand the cast. If I were trying to compare this series to an existing work - the closest I could come would be the Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy - with less focus on humor and more focus on plot.

DJ Holte does a great job narrating and voicing the varied characters, including different species and races using voice modulation and sound effects. It's never distracting and helped distinguish some characters later on as we start exploring more alien races.

The writing is fast paced without ever feeling cramped. Equal parts are spent on character and keeping the plot moving. I can't think of too many lulls in the story which is commendable for a longer work like this.

I found it enjoyable and well realized with a conclusion that brings a smile to my face.

Should have been labeled a children's book

The writing style was definitely not intended for adults. Every expression on people's faces explained, then often the character would say the same thing "their face" was saying. I think there were at least 500 mentions of the word poop. The dialog was absolutely horrible, not the way anyone talks. I think in some cases the author thought they were being funny, but no one above the 5th grade would've thought any of this was funny. I used it to help me fall asleep.

Narration was just okay, female voices weren't very good...some good special effects for radio/AI voices etc. He wasn't given much to work with though.

The book had to be written by a 3th grader

The book was very disappointed I thought I was listening to a third grader tell a story it had such childish remarks like pooping and farting and play childish game and talk in baby talk very disappointing

Well...

It's a fun listen excepting for the acronyms and other jargon that everyone in the fictional world knows, but not the listener. Sometimes they get explained several chapters after use. The narrator is good with all the voices - the further into the series one gets, the more there are. Their distinct voices are the best way to identify them.

I was given this audiobook by the author for free and have voluntarily left this review (that doesn't get him off the hook for not explaining what 'HOSaS' means).

Humorous, Intriguing Sci-fi

The author of this trilogy has a vivid imagination which he skillfully articulated providing me with illustrious world building visualizations. His diverse cast of creative, complex, multi-layered characters (human, alien, and AI) are colorful and likeable. The interactions of his characters were often quirky but convincing. The story was intriguing with entertaining twists and turns. The plot was well paced with action, adventure, suspense, mystery, space battles and levity. This trilogy provided me with hours of listening enjoyment. The narrator has a pleasant, clear voice with which he provided effortless transitions between the characters while expressing a wide range of emotions. Liked the Narrator & the crab pet. period.

Skipped over so much & didn't really care, just wanted it to be over. Occasionally it captured my interest, but then it got ridiculous & lost me. I kept hoping it would get back on track, but it got sillier.
Seems like this was a juvenile book except for the occasional sex. So much didn't make sense, characters acted stupidly, especially Snow, which, as a woman, was extremely annoying (except when she was kicking butt, but she only managed that by being stronger than regular folks on the planet, so really didn't count). Much of it was Childish, and true of most characters from adults to children. The crab was actually the only character that was consistent & didn't want to make me puke.
The swallowing squid aliens seemed to be straight out of another sci fi I've read, complete with the premise of their purpose, except they weren't ruled & sent out by a janky schizophrenic two headed centaur. Please! (Sorry, can't remember the name of the series the squid were in, but it's definently not original to this author.)
Seems like some of this also came from Safehold's origin story (by David Weber & way, way better).
I'll probably see about returning this as I just couldn't listen to it all the way through, no matter how hard I tried to be fair.
Feels like a bad compilation of a bunch of other sci fi stories.
Going through the forest was probably the best & last good part of the book. After that it was down hill all the way.
oh & I usually don't even care about the validity of the science & can suspend disbelief, but even for me, everything was just too glibly glossed over & seemed to be not even remotely sensible or plausible.
Characters weren't likeable or believable for very long.
Even for a trilogy in one, a mega pack, whatever, not worth it. Go for something else. Sorry.

Great narrator, pretty good story, the jokes ehh..

I enjoyed the story and the narration, the comedy is pretty childish though, expect to roll your eyes a lot at all the poop or fart jokes. Commander Karrick is a baller, I wish he had more "screen time"

Greatly enjoyed the story. Narrator was excellent, great at the different voices - of which there were many.

Excellent Series

The whole story is great. You fall in love with the group of people, and if something happens you feel the loss of that character. When a book(s) can pull at your heart strings you know you found a great series. I found another author that kicks butt and with the narrator's performance who could as for a better combination.
