Summary

It's a private eye’s job to dig up secrets. But what if those secrets turn out to be her own?

It’s been two years since Dinah Collins left the NYPD in disgrace, forced out for digging too deeply into the sudden disappearance of a fellow cop—her brother, Danny. Now, scraping by as a PI, Dinah is hired to find a young woman, Lucy Fisher, who vanished on Halloween, last seen wearing a creepy costume.

As she pursues a deadly trail of clues, Dinah will find she’s faced with a terrible choice: If she can only save one person, Danny or Lucy, who will it be?

Never guessed the ending

This was a great weeks listen on the way to work. The plot was complicated, but not too much to listen to whilst driving, and I really loved not guessing the ending. The plot had lots of twists and turns which kept me listening and made me want to tune in the next day

Horrible sound effects

An ok storyline totally ruined by dreadful sound effects. Would have preferred if it had just been read 'straight'.

Excellent

Listening to these productions with multiple narrators, spatial sound etc. kind of makes me wonder if I can ever return to a book with just one narrator. But as the quantity is quite scarce, I guess I have to. This was an excellent story, and the audio and the sound effects were just awesome! Almost felt like watching a movie without the picture (that sounds boring, but I mean it in a positive way). Loved everything about it! Very sad it is over.

Loved it

At first I wasn't so sure I would like simply because it's a dramatisation and I wasn't used to listening to books recorded like this, but within a few minutes I was so engrossed by the story that I adjusted and got used to it. I just wished that this was the start to a series of books based on the main character an ex cop turned private eye and has plenty of twist and turns right till the end.

Why the music?

Good story but spoiled by the amateurish sound effects and bits of music that detract rather than add to the story. I persevered with it rather than enjoyed it which is a pity because the actual storyline is good. I felt I’d gone back in time and was listening to a play on the radio!

Spoiled by the sound effects

The characters were well acted and the story was fine, but the sound effects were awful. Especially the slow trudging footsteps all the time. Are all the sidewalks in America gravel paths? The main character walking sounded more like a bear stomping along a shingle beach. Just about tolerated it to complete the story.
