Summary

Newly appointed District Sheriff Tristan Haraldsen and his wife, Elsebeth, are looking forward to a peaceful semiretirement in the remote fishing village of Djevulsfjord on the stunningly beautiful island of Vagar. But when two boys go missing during the first whale hunt of the season, the repercussions strike at the heart of the isolated coastal community. As he pursues his investigations, Tristan discovers that the Mikkelsen brothers aren’t the first young men to have vanished on Vagar.

Determined to solve the mystery of Djevulsfjord, yet encountering suspicion wherever he turns, Haraldsen comes to realize he and his wife are not living in the rural paradise they had imagined and that the wild beauty of the region hides a far darker reality.

Sorry, too much animal cruelty

I have loved David Hewson books but the graphic and overly gory depiction of the Pilot Whale kill drive in the Faroes. It’s tradition. We know it happens, but this story was just too much. Sickening.

The narrator did his best, but he was given a horror story to tell.

Really enjoyed this.

Having read a fair few of David Hewson books, and had visited the Faroes, I was drawn to this book. I read a couple of negative reviews, but so glad I didn't take any notice of them. I enjoyed it. it twisted and turned a bit and typical of this author, you don't know what the end is going to be, although you think you do several times! Yes, the descriptions of the "Grind" are savage but I have read far worse descriptive pieces in books and in my view it was necessary to the following story.
The narration is by one of my favourite narrators Saul Reichlin, (who has narrated other Hewson books) who brought it to life.

So surprising....

I’ve read and listened to many David HEWSON stories but was so disappointed with this one. There was so much violence in the first hour concerning the whale fishing and the boys lives that I really didn’t want to proceed with it.
His books always have violent parts but they weave through his stories and make sense. In this story it came across as separate and just violence for violence sake. So surprising and disappointing.

So Disappointed

I have read and very much enjoyed all the Nic Costa and Pieter Vos books plus a couple, I think, of the general novels. I found this book overlong - I found myself saying “for goodness sake, get on with it”. There were several occasions where the thoughts of a character were repeated - a bit like those TV programmes where you are told after 10 minutes what has gone before. I also found the plot very predictable and the characters irritating and clichéd.

Saul Reichlin was excellent as always. HIs narration is often a determining factor in buying a book.

I would not recommend this unless you are very patient

Not one of his best

So sad always look forward to a David Hewson book but right from the start was disappointed! over one hour of torture to the whales and even Saul Reichlin who is such a good narrator could not lift this book. Sorry I do not want to finish it. hope other readers can get to the end.
