About this listen
From the number-one best-selling author of The Ashes of London and The Fire Court this is the first instalment in the acclaimed Lydmouth series.
Workmen in the small market town of Lydmouth are demolishing an old cottage. A sledgehammer smashes into what looks like a solid wall. Instead, layers of wallpaper conceal the door of a locked cupboard which holds a box - and in the box is the skeleton of a young baby.
Items within the box suggest that the baby was entombed early in the 19th century, but when another man is also found dead, the evidence suggests that the baby's death is more recent and that a killer is on the loose. For journalist Jill Francis, newly arrived from London, this looks like her first story to chase....

Excellent
Beautiful narration as always. The characters are well drawn and the suffocating atmosphere of the 1950s in a small town comes over well. I normally expect to find one or two characters I really like as individuals but in this series their foibles and actions mean that I have not warmed to any of them……..but they ate fascinating enough to make me want to keep reading.

Philip Franks
The narrator really made this story. His enunciation, proficiency and ease of expression lent charm to an otherwise bland narrative (if murder can ever be considered bland?!!)

Gentle but clever
Narration is as good as it gets which makes the story so enjoyable and gripping. Characters live in the words and each helps the story along. You might have met these people and you understand the plot as they develop it.
A perfect audiobook.

Good listen
Very well narrated too. First in series has set up the characters nicely for some complex relationships along with detective work.

Murder mystery at its best
What a super listen! Gripping and paced yet calming and measured. Wonderful narrator could listen to him all day. Downloading book 2 in the series immediately

"An Air that Kills"
I really like Andrew Taylor, and I LOVED the "Fires of London" series, so I was quite eager to start exploring the Lydmouth books ... So far, I'm not hugely impressed by any one part of the first book. The most positive thing I can say at this stage is that I don't absolutely hate it ! The overall impression that I took away from it was rather drab and dreary; perhaps it was the period - the stifling conventional politeness of a small town in the post war years - that left me feeling rather flat and unmoved by the whole thing ...
However, such is my admiration for Andrew Taylor that I am prepared to give the series another try with book 2. There's a good chance that it will grow on me although the jury is still very much out at this point.

Very quiet
I enjoyed the story, but the recording was so very quiet. no matter what device I used I needed to max out the volume and even then there were parts I couldn't hear well.

A really good book
So nice to read something slightly different.
A good mystery set in the 1950’s. Perhaps an inevitable ending but so what?
